Gizzy fell

I`m gutted Gizzy has wanted to play out all day, but when i put her back in a few minutes ago she waited until i left the room and leapt for the door, she wasn`t holding on and fell about 2 feet to the floor.

I scooped her up and checked her over, i think her bones are okay, but she has a scrape behind her eye. Fingers crossed she has escaped serious injury as she has gone right back to climbing. I just feel terrible that i wasn`t there to catch her.

Oh no! Poor Gizzy! As there seems to be no obvious serious injuries, just keep an eye on her. If she starts limping or not being able to bear weight on a leg then a vet visit would be best. They can move really quick when they want to, little monkeys! They do puff their ribs out on impact when they fall. Amy managed to jump off my hand when she was tiny - she just ran so fast straight off before I had time to react! She landed with a splat, spread-eagled on the carpet, but was completely ok! It was me that wasn't - I felt like the worst chamelemum in the world! They must fall quite often in the wild and some even use the 'drop to the floor' trick when scared or to avoid predators. I think WelshOneEmma's cham Hugo does this.

Thanks Tiff for the advice. She does seem to have suffered no ill effects thank heavens. I think it upset us far more than Gizzy as she was soon zooming around and climbing the walls again. She does seem to have lost a bit of confidence in her house, but i hope she will soon regain it, poor little girl. I will definitely be keeping a very close eye on her and have a vet lined up thanks to a thread on the forum.

That's good you have found a vet 'just in case'. Amy is already registered with my vet and I will book Tommy in next week when I book the cat in. I am pleased to hear that Gizzy seems to be ok and uninjured. Like you said, we feel far worse than they do! Oh, the guilt and shock!

Yup, Hugo is a master of this manoeuvre! Has done it countless times (first time was 5 miinutes after we got him, dropped staright to the floor - 4ft drop!). Usually I catch him, but this is why i don't handle him very often, becuase he will just let go and drop. Little bugger!!

Jet did this shortly afer I recieved him. He was with my sister while I cleaned his cage. I thought she dropped him!! My sister who have had chams for 25 years dropped my baby! I was shocked. The next day he did ti to me!!

Yeah, he's been fine so far. The worst one was when we first got him, because he was so tiny and you heard the splat as he landed. We rushed him straight to the vets, as i thought he was having a brain haemorrhage as his eyes were swelling (i know now that he was cleaning them after getting dust in them from the floor!). The only thing he had was a slight black eye. The other times he's done it, i have been ready to catch him, as i expect him to do it (but he only does it to me, and gets very nervous on me, and i am always nervous when i have him, so i think they are all linked!). If it happens again, the only thing i can suggest is just take her straight to the vets.

Well, you learn something new everyday. I had no idea they cleaned their eyes like that, thank heavens Gizzy didn`t do that yesterday i`d have been in a blind panic. We were going to get her to the vet, but on scooping her up she turned a lovely colour and just wanted to climb. I still feel terrible for not catching her, but thankfully she hasn`t held it against me. It`s amazing how robust they are considering their size.
