I purchased the GardenPlus hand sprayer from Lowe's and then saw a warning on the bottom reading something to the effect: warning, this product contains material known to the state of california to cause cancer, birth defects, etc. wash hands after use ...... WTF, does anyone know about this or whether or not that even makes sense. I don't know why they would sell ANYTHING that could have those ramifications simply from touching it when its a product that is to be touched ALOT...?

That sign is common in Cali....they even put it in shop windows warning that materials used in the store can cause all those problems....is it plastic?

I purchased some river rocks with the same warning, they were coated in some sort of oil and I just threw them out. There might be a lube for o-rings that is in use with the sprayer, I would get a diffrent one.

yeh its a plastic sprayer works pretty well but theres definitely an odd smell with it and its never been used for anything but water, I never knew it was possible for a cancer causing agent or something that would cause birth defects to be active in a finished product AND to be passed just through contact. As soon as I saw the sticker I figured not to use it but was curious just the same.

I think it will be ok, just put some bleach and water in there mix it up let it sit a min and spray it out, and then rinse real good with water :p Make sure you spray with lots more water after, to get the bleach out of the hose

lol, I know how frustrating it is.
To be honest, I bet even your car has that warning as well.

No guys, the label CLEARLY means it is only dangerous IN CALIFORNIA. Sorry, Frans, but I guess you shouldn't use the sprayer :(

:D. ahahahahaha!!!
I don't use that sprayer actually..
My grad school cafeteria has that sign as well.

HAHA, for real, I would at least be happy if they could put the warning somewhere visible and brightly colored instead of on the bottom... pretty sure if I saw a flaming warning logo with the word cancer or birth defect I would not purchase the product lol

Fear not - it has to do with a chemical called BPA

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisphenol_A

Unless you feed your cham its own body weight in BPA will you have a problem. You and I have spent our lives drinking out of cups containing BPA - however research has show that there is "negligible concern that exposure of pregnant women to bisphenol A will result in fetal or neonatal mortality, birth defects, or reduced birth weight and growth in their offspring."

As a proactive step the US Federal Government (and many foreign governments) have mandated all baby bottles and such no longer be manufactured with BPA. California jumped on the bandwagon and said that you must either cease using it in manufacturing or clearly state the warning on the container (your sticker).
