I have a 9 month old chameleon that has recently fallen into bad health. She hasnt moved for two days and but I recently got her to eat 5 mealworms. She probably has a very mild case of metabolic bone disease. She has fallen into bad health only recently and has been moderately healthy up until about 4 days ago. I feel that there is not much I can do for her but I dont want to just watch her die when someone with more experience very well may be able to bring her back to good health. Please tell me if you are interested and I will pay all the shipping costs. (Only shipping in the US).

Can you post some pics of her? There is a chameleon rescue in California. Here is the link http://chameo.org/. I think you should post some pics so people can determine the extent of the MBD and if they would want to take on something like that.

species: veiled chameleon
sex: female
age: 9 months
time in my care: 6 months
handling: i handle my chameleon rarely, maybe 1 time a month at most
food: i feed my chameleon a mix of crickets and giant meal worms. im not sure how many she eats but id have to say its usually been 6 crickets or 12 mealworms a day, only up until recently its has become around 3 crickets a day or 6 mealworms. I feed her only when she runs out of her food. The mealworms arent gutloaded but im fairly sure the crickets are (i buy them by the box from petco).
supplements: i give her none
watering: i use a waterfall to water my chameleon. she does fine with the waterfall, i see her go down and drink from it alot. i only mist once a day.
fecal description:my chameleons feces are usually a darker brown tint with some slimy areas. they seem to be rather large for her size. she has never been tested for parasites.
history: my chameleon has seem very healthy up until 3 weeks ago she started having a darker shade of green, and only 4 days has she started eating less.
cage type: I keep my chameleon in a wire screen commercially made cage. the dimension are 16x16x28.
lighting: im using a zoomed reptispot 75watt basking lamp and a zoomed compact reptisun UVB lamp. I usually turn the lights off at 2-4 a.m. and turn them on at 2-4 p.m..
temperature: i dont have a thermometer anywhere but my chameleon has always seemed to do well with the basking lamp like 5.5 inches above her head. at night the temp of my house is around 71 degrees fahrenheit.
humidity: i have no idea what the humidity is, but i try to mist once a day.
plants: i use fake plants from a reputable commercial brand.
placement: my cage is placed at the corner of my large living room. its is 12 feet from a hallway so people walk by it at a relatively far distance and my chameleon has never seemed to notice.
location: i live in austin, texas.
current problem: she seems to weak to climb branches but she has good color.

The pictures were taken minutes ago.

I'm glad you're trying to give her the best shot at life. I can see a few problems in her care but i'm sure others will elaborate.

What i'm curious about is why the awkward timing? Suggested is a 12 hour cycle and MOST people try for normal day hours. Example.. 9am on, 9pm off. Very simple. I don't understand your "off at 2-4 a.m" and "on at 2-4pm". I'm not even entirely sure of what times you have your lights are on and off... But, I'm thinking there must have been some rationale behind this?

[EDIT] I'm starting to think you don't turn them on/off at the exact same time everyday, and this is the only way it makes sense to me. Am i correct?

I have a 9 month old chameleon that has recently fallen into bad health..

based on the husbandry, I can't imagine why she has "fallen" into bad health. it seems more like there was never any other possible outcome. and you have other veileds as well? you need to change you husbandry in a big way or adopt out the other ones while they are healthy enough to ship.

I do not have a whole lot of tolerance for neglect. :(

I think you need to put her down she is just suffering and looks to be already done with life as she can't even hold herself I just feel so bad

I dont have any other veileds... this is my first chameleon and i read all about it but i have been moving around alot recently on vacations and switching houses and I just sort of forgot. I do care for her, and yeah i mean its my fault but i still feed her and made sure she looked happy. I mean she seriously did seem fine until a few days ago, but i guess i missed the bad health signals. I mean she stays green instead of brown. I at least tried.

and i turn the lights off at 2-4 am because thats when i go to sleep and i turn them on when i wake up at around 2-4 pm. I figured she still had the recommended 12 hours of day and night, it just wasnt synced with the actual day and night.

There are a lot of things you need to change about the way you keep your chameleons if you're ever going to look into getting another. I recommend flat out asking on this forum what you need, and how to care for them, if you want to get another.

In the meantime, since you're trying to do the right thing with this one now either find her a home who will do everything she needs - which looks to be quite a bit, poor baby looks very sick. Or sadly, get her put down.

I realize you feel bad for your mistakes. But a chameleon is a very big responsibility. It may be hard, but you can't forget about her care. They are IMO one of the most fragile reptiles out there. Have you ever provided an egg laying bin? She may be egg bound. Without supplements, she WILL develop Metabolic Bone Disease and other health problems. She doesn't look well enough to ship. My advice, take her to the vet, get a bigger cage (2'x2'x4'), and in a little bit you can try to relocate her. Her light schedule MUST be during daylight hours. Waterfalls breed bacteria, get it out of there. Mist 4-6 times a day, or get an auto-mister. Please, read up some more on husbandry, and later you can relocate her. Right now, her life depends on you.

EDIT: If you don't want to take her into the vet/get her better, give her to someone locally who knows what they're doing.

No supplement?

You must not have tried very hard as you claim if you never bothered to read that they need calcium and multivitamin supplements.

If someone is willing to rehome her and take the time to nurse her back to health you need to DRIVE to their house if you really care about her.

Okay everyone, back to the no bashing. The OP clearly understands that their husbandry was not correct. They are trying to find someone who wants to help her back to health. Lets get that happening. Useful comments and helpful links possibly? You are not helping by bashing on the OP.

To the OP, sorry your cham has fallen into bad health. Try to search your area for a reptile rescue or look around the forums for members who may be local to you and willing to help you. In the mean time I would get her to the vet and see if there is anything at all you can do. I would not ship her in her conditions. Possibly after you have nursed her back to health if you plan on still giving her away. (I would recommend it) but for now focus on what you can still do for her because she is still in your care.
