it seems like it would be cheaper to buy in bulk from a place online but is it any harder to maintain that many crickets?

I get my crix from flukers. I have order pretty much all sizes from them for about 1 year now. I really like getting crickets from them they usually give you much more than you ordered. For example if you order 50 they will give you 75. The only thing I would not recommend is getting pinheads (1 weeks as they call them) from them because every shipment I have gotten has come dead.

hey bigtex, send me a message if you have reached a conclusion where to buy
your crickets.
I want to try it out too.. (i'm also new to this. I usually just go to my local
pet store).

My local pet stores offer pre-pay options where they'll order boxes of crickets, etc, for you at considerable savings. For instance, I pay $11.50 per 500. The cheapest I've found from the breeders for crickets is $10 per 500 at www.cricketsdirect.com. Once you add in their $6 shipping charges the LPS seems like the best way to go.

That's good on the crickets but am I reading this right? The two shipping options cost an additional $11.98 or $16.30? My LPS charges $13 for 1000.

Hmmmm.
I'll have to look and see if they have changed their rates.
The last time I ordered I paid $17 and change for crickets and shipping which put the price @ about 1.7 cents per cricket.
Even at $16.30 shipping you'll end up at about 2.6 cents per cricket.

So I guess then we should all be enquiring with our local pet stores before ordering online then? My local store is kind of overpriced on just about everything. If they charge $13 per thousand it's 1.3 cents each. I'm pretty sure I could get them less expensively with another store around here but it would involve driving farther so it balances out.

Kent,
I have to say that if I could get quality crickets from my local reptile store for the prices you can....I would go that route!
They are 12 cents ea. here. 1000 is $120.00 plus 8% sales tax.

Wowwww. Ok, I see where you're coming from! Is that like a Petco or something? We have a bunch of little private stores around here that all seem to have similar pricing for this stuff. I'm really surprised they wouldn't give a discount for pre-paid bulk orders. I guess they either want your money or they don't....

Anyway, I was also discussing this topic with someone who lives a few miles from me. He also orders online, but I've never quite understood how it costs less to go that route. I'm pretty sure if you were ordering thousands at a time that most of the local stores here would lower their prices to compete with oredering online + shipping.

It's not a chain. Petco sells theirs for (I think) 10 cents ea.
Don't get me wrong, I totally understand the overhead of running a retail store and why they have to set their prices where they do.
That doesn't mean I have to pay it.
A LOT of people buy crickets from them. I imagine it's a decent % of their profit. Eventually they will probably have to consider online competition....but I think there are a lot of people who want to buy only 20 or so at a time.
Over the years ...or even a few months....that can really add up.

Ive ordered from many different suppliers over the years. Wormman Basset Cricket. Premium Cricket. and Fluker Farms. My last order was from Fluker.

I always change for numerous reasons. First of all price of both feeders and shipping. Secondly products they sell.

Worman was ok but a lil expensive

Basset was ok for a lil while until a started finding weird bugs along with the crickets

Premium was ok except when i wanted super or phoenix worms I had to overnight them and that was $$$$

And flukers has been great so far they have all kinds of things and I dont have to buy 1000 superworms like reptilefood I can get 100 or 500 instead. And overnight is resonable compared to the other companies ive tried.

I would try Reptile food but 1000 is a lot of supers for just my beardie. And I remember One time I got that many and they chew threw the tub they were in and before I knew it there were beatles every where. And they have a nasty odor they release when irritated.

Right now Im stickin with Flukers until I get my veiled and he can help eat the supers. Then Ill start with reptilefood cuz Ive heard alot of good things about them

www.cricketsdirect.com

The site is a bit hokey but the bugs are coming from a local southern ca source.
that means cheaper shipping ($6 bucks hairfarm)
and less cricket loss.
generally they ship MTW and it arrives the next day.

If I over order (it happens) I've got some deals worked out with some local pet stores
where they'll take and credit me the crickets for later.

If you order bulk you'll end up ahead after the overhead is taken care of
it makes sense if you have more than 3 chams to get 1K
and house them till needed.

(word of advise... don't get the adults if you like you sleep to be restful)
