Fittings for a Drain in Substrate Pan

I'm trying to find a fitting to make a drain in a fully planted substrate pan that will also fit through the about 11/16ths inch gap in the wire shelving I have the cages on. I want to be able to attach some sort of standard tubing to it to run it to a bucket.

This is the kind of fitting I wanted I wanted but can't seem to find something small enough.

I have DragonStrand cages and will use DragonStrand substrate pans. Everything will be over a DragonStrand drainage pan but I want to use the drainage trays as an emergency back up only. (I have hardwood floors in the chameleon room.) I don't want any standing water in the drainage pans.

I'm hoping to find a 1/2" fitting.

Suggestions?

I just got a 3/4" bulkhead in today from jungle hobbies. I plan to use it in the dragon strand easy drip to prevent overflow etc. I dunno if it's what ya need.
But def looks like it'll be a nice and clean install. Don't mind the tubing that was ordered for my mist king.

Could you possibly cut a section of the wire shelf out to accomodate? The strainer for the application seems like a wise idea.

I was just going to post a picture of that and ask if anyone had one! Can you have a look at it and give me some measurements?

I want the opening (drain) to be as close to flush with the substrate floor as possible since this will be a laying bin as well. I want as much water out as possible. There will be a very thin layer of hydroballs on the bottom.

The top part that has the opening slits in it, does it screw onto the elbow or is it fixed with the bottom nut the only part that moves and tightens? Basically, will there be two nuts on each side of the substrate floor?

How tall is the basket part? How wide is the widest part that is on the outside? How big a hose does it take?

Thanks so much!

Wow, that's a lot bigger than I imagined.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from the second picture it looks like the flange that goes on the inside of the enclosure is part of the plastic piece that has the threads. The only thing that screws on the threads is the nut? Does the elbow screw on, too?

I think I can get a 1/2 inch one so everything should be smaller.

Yes that's the only screw on part, the nut, the rest is push in. It states it needs a 1.5" hole drilled to fit it correctly. This makes me nervous cause it's close to the depth of the tray I have coming, but I could always mount it to the floor and point it straight up to drain.

What are you mounting this to?

I want to put it somewhere on the bottom of DragonStrand substrate trays with a tube draining into a bucket. On a shelf below will be the DragonsStrand drainage pans. Does that sound feasible? The drainage pans will only be a back up.

I found a place that has the same thing but 1/2". I'm going to try to find it locally before I order 15 of them. (I know, I'm dreaming.)

Sounds like a solid plan to me. Mine will go in an easy drip pan from dragon strand. It will really be more for overflow back up incase I forget to clean the bottom out as I don't mist super often 4x a day at 1 min a piece and 3 mins at 12p.
The dripper is all day of course too. Luckily I only have the one enclosure to care for comparitively lol

You are putting yours in the drainage pan that the cage sits on?

Have you used the DragonStrand drainage pan before or are you just setting a DragonStrand up for the first time?

No I havent, but, the cage won't rely on the pan for support it will sit on a 24"x24" cabinet with buckets for drainage and my mist king reservoir.

Now I'm really confused. Will the cage be on the drainage pan? I didn't like that there was standing water in the drainage pans. It collects in the middle, so there is always stagnant water under my cages. If you are using a drainage pan that the cage sits on, the water tends to pool in the middle, not at the front where it is easy to remove.

Absolutely it will,I have a few options to make it drain easy. I can since the plastic is flexible pull the drain tight creating a divot so the water runs down to the center drain, the cage floor is a screen that's raise off the bottom of the pan it appears. But if it naturally collects in the center i won't have to do and pull the drain tight really. I dunno it'll be easier to figure out when its all in front of me...although I have a spare 19x19 drain tray up stairs to mess with ....

Just a heads up that is isn't easy to vacuum out the drain pan. It's a royal pain, to be honest. I'm going to fully plant substrate pans and have them drain out of that to a bucket with the drainage pans as a back up in case there is water leakage around the edges of the substrate pans or the drain. I really don't like the stagnant pooling of water.

My other option could be chocking the front up slightly and securing it tight on the cabinet so it rolls back wards for me. That's what we did in my current enclosure, pitched the floor slightly. And it works rather well to be honest. Like I said I'll make something work cleanly and efficiently. Just will take some messing with.
