My 4 to 5 month old veiled escaped for a few minutes today while outside in the sun and ended up climbing up a Sago Palm. She must have hurt her eye during her 10-minute walk about.
When I found her, one eye was squinted shut. I flushed her eye with sterile artificial tears with no preservatives. I washed her just in case the Sago Palm could cause a skin reaction (they are very poisonous to ingest). I have been flushing her eye every 30 minutes, but will now just let her sleep.
During and after I flush the eye, it opens more and stays open longer. She's much better than when I found her.
There are tiny abrasions on the turret under the eye and abrasions on her back.
I don't know the structure of a chameleon's eye, but every once in awhile, she seems to be drawing the eye inward and then it looks like a third eye lid is trying to sweep across her closed eye, but only gets half way.
Does anyone have a link to the anatomy of a chameleon eye and how the eye and eyelids work?
I'll get her to a vet on Monday if she isn't better as I'm not sure I can find a reptile vet on the weekend.
Suggestions?
