Dubia roach escaped

I was feeding my waxy monkey tree frog a few small dubias when I noticed there was a hole in the brown lunch bag I was using to coat them. I was able to find all of the except one. Should I be worried that there is one roaming around my house?

Nope. I live in so cal. I had a few escape. My old Rubbermaid tub had a gap in the lid and a few would escape. I didn't realize until I had about 10-12 roaming around my house. I haven't found any survivors around my house. I usually find them dead around my house like 3-5 days later. You will be fine.

no, they stop breeding by 80*, they are slow and not usually that hard to find. they dont like light, so you will probably find them under a bed, dresser, carpet, anything laying on the floor where they can hide from the light during the day.
it will just live off the debris on your floor and sooner or later he will turn up.

The only reason I would be worried is cause they scare the crap out of me!!... and that is why I do not keep Dubia!!! Florida has their own roach population!

I have seen dubias listed 4-sale in Florida , so they are there . I know it is illegal to ship them into there, but are they illegal if already there ? I have had dubias escape . Some have hid in the substrate in the enclosure & I had the walkway too close to the top . I have found a couple adult males ( put in as small nymphs ) in my home . I picked up the trash can & had 2 in my hand . Keep a look out near the trash can etc .

I've noticed that too, you aren't allowed to ship to FL. I wonder if its alright if they are already in FL. That's a good question.

If you are caught with them you can get a heavy fine and jail time. Stick with Discoids. They are the same size and are raised the same way. I don't know what the issue is but I was reading about a fella that had to pay $1500 fiine and got 1 year in jail (reduced to 30 days) Just not worth it in my life. No reptile stores will sell them (Dubia) and saying you didn't know is not considered an excuse.

My Discoids reproduce pretty quickly. I keep them in a tub with a light bulb on 24/7 that keeps their environment at 90+ all the time. They love apples, oranges, watermelon, carrots, kale and water crystals to keep them well hydrated. Anything they see as food. When I make veggie soup I toss the ends of stuff in there and see if they like it. Check the list of things that are safe for your cham and those are the things you can feed them. When you see this thing sticking out of the abdomen of a female she is ready to to drop her babies. I like to use empty paper towel and toilet paper cardboard rolls because it makes it easy to shake them out, but you can use cardboard egg crates. They like to hide when they are mating and hanging out.

Has anybody seen any pet stores selling Dubias ? Has anybody sold to stores for resale ? When my colony stablizes , I am going to have way more than I can use even if I get another Cham .

below 80 they don't reproduce ( from what i read :) ) .

well thats interesting. mine are reproducing under 80. they are reproducing faster now that daytime temps are higher
i live in southern california as well they are in a rubbermaid container with no lid and no heat pad and they are doing fine

I figured they would , but like I said .. that is what I have read countless times . I don't heat my Dubia colony since it has warmed up here in MD . They are almost stablized & there is no need in me having WAY more than 1 chameleon can eat .

they are in a rubbermaid container with no lid

Mine, the little ones, climb the walls of the tub I have them in. BocaJan gave me some Discoids (not Dubias) yesterday evening to start my own colony and the little guys started climbing the walls right away, I had a good lid to put on it luckily.

I'm going this weekend to find a plastic tub with a "slicker" surface.

shipping tape is supposed to not let them climb also . I double stacked & staggered what I did , so they could not climb up the seems ( sp ? ) that might make a glue ladder :)

actually i may have lied. -_- it might be sterilite. it does have pretty slick side though. I got it from Target.

Ok

I looked for it today but did not find it. It will be around 4 to 6 months before it reaches full size assuming it survives. I will just be sure to never loose another one.

i believe Florida is the only state with a law against Dubia. Kinda silly ... but i guess they have had a LOT if non native species invade already lol.

dubia clarification

below 80 or above

generally speaking the warmer they are, the faster they breed. temps above a 100* are usually bad, may start to cause die off. the colder it is, the slower they breed. by the time the temps get into the 70's breeding has pretty much stopped altogether.

i suppose it could have been a pregnant female that escaped. but they thrive from 80+, to 95, temps outside of that, and they dont do so well.

ime, if you have plenty of furniture/vertical egg crate, they arent usually that interested in the sides of the container. they are flutter flyers, so a lid is still recommended. discoids climb better than dubia.
there are other things you can use, shipping tape thing does work, (the clear smooth tape not the tape with thread in it. make it 4" wide and smooth with no wrinkles). also you can use baby oil or vaseline. if you dont have faith in any of that, you can use bug stop. a teflon paint, designed just for that purpose. jmo
