so I'm cleaning out Trixxi's enclosure and moving things about a bit and down she comes on her vine......she looks like she's about to fall so i put my hand into the viv to support her and she holds onto my hand with her front and back legs and settles on the vine....just looking at me for a good 5 min:)........in the end i had to move as i was getting cramp!!so my question is.....is that sign of affection or fear that she was going to drop?i like to think that she loves me as much as i love her:D

Chameleons do not feel affection twards a human. My guess was she was parazlied with fear or was hoping for a snack.

Lol dont destroy the poor guy, let him believe what he wants. I mean chams are very intelligent and have semi complex brains, may b they do have emotions no 1 can know 100%

Oh sorry, lol and thats the spirit! i mean some times the way my chams look at me and what they do kind of sparks something and makes me feel like they do know. ;)

I do not believe its a healthy practice to humanize a pet

humanizing of reptiles can lead to judgments being made on an emotional level rather than identifying behaviors that would actually indicate what is going on. If a Chameleon runs up your arm when you open the cage be assured it is because it wants food or to get out of the confined space. Not cuddle with you.

I can tell you I love all my chameleons and not one of them thinks the same of me.

Sorry

Lol im one of those stuck in between, where they are lesser on the mental compasity, but some times their actions can be interpreted to mean something, where humanization comes in. But how people for concepts will always be humanization, where it is one side or the other becasue its what we think and we usually relate that to our (human) experiences. So i agree with you and ronnie both.

A fourth option - neither fear, love, nor hoping for a snack, but she was slipping and you caught her. She now had something to hold onto (who knows where it came from), so she wasn't slipping any more, so problem solved. She saw you as a convenient branch.:D
Thaxter is very good at climbing halfway on me, then deciding he neither needs to come any further, nor to go back (generally when I'm reaching up for him, and he's considerably above my head).
