DIY misting idea

so ive come up with this idea for an automatic mister and wonder if you guys have done anything similar mabe some suggestions... Im thinking mabe setting up a small fountain pump in some distilled water and rigging it to a timer for every couple hours to come on for a miniute or so, running some aquarium air hose or tubing up to the cage and fitting like a pump up sprayer nozzle or some kind of misting nozzle on the end, so when the pump kicks on it will push the water through the nozzle and let out a mist? should work right

It is very possible to build your own, yes. Misting nozzles are sold for all sorts of purposes. Youve got the right idea, the problem is getting it to work! If you make an attempt I'd enjoy seeing it...

you will find that by the time you put in the time and money needed for the materials it would be just as cost effective to get a mist king kit. The mist king is made to last for years of use and can grow with you and your chams. Not to discourage, but you will end up better in the long run going with a MK.

Most diy misters turn out to be automatic drippers :)

Good luck.. Search the forums, theres lots pf ideas out there... But I like the air pump idea. Might actually work...

So true, it does make me think about the amount people spend on "D.I.Y" projects that end up costing more than just buying a fantastic of the shelf product!!!! (Iam no millionaire, and i live in the UK! but i will be investing in a Mistking when the time is right) :D Good luck anyway Joshua94 :)

I have built and continue to use Do-It-Yourself systems, but as someone mentioned, it is not really a 'mister', more like an auotmated waterer. Pond pumps don't produce enough PSI to create a true mist. What mine produce is more similar to rain. It also varies depending on what size of a pond pump you invest in. The more gallons per hour (GPH) your pump will push, the more 'power' it will create. I use the term power loosely because you will not get a mist, unless you get a massive pond pump and only run 1 or maybe 2 nozzles. The amount you would spend on a pump of the caliber is close to just buying an Aquazamp or Mistking. But if you are only going to need to water 1 or 2 cages, pond pump systems will get your chameleons watered, but don't expect a true, fine mist. You must also have a good digital timer that is programmable in seconds, because most of the 'Push-pin' appliance timers' shortest run cycle is usually 15 minutes. So do the math; If you got a 330 GPH pump, (which is what I use), your talking running 83 gallons of water in a 15 minute run-impossible to do! I have mine to come on 8 times throughout a 24 hour period and each cycle varies from 2 minutes to 5 minutes- just long enough to wet all of the vegetation really well and provide a drink, and I still go through 10 gallons of water a day- That's twice that I have to refill the resvoir a day, and twice a day I have to dump a 5-gallon bucket of water. It gets old to say the least, and I won't even go into what happens when you go out drinking with your buds and sleep in the next day and forget to empty the bucket!!!! That's a thread all its own,.. And a 330 pond pump from Lowe's will cost you about $50-60. Plus the mist heads, tubing and you'll need some type of good drainage/collection method. Not trying to be discouraging, because I love Do-It-Yourself projects myself, but it may be worth it to just spend an extra $40-50 and get a true mist system. Here is my homemade system below:

im all for dyi but you cant beat the mistking, but the time you find a good pimp and timer you are already at the 100 mark. plus Marty had always provided me with great service

Yo, Jdog why didn't you make good use of that window? No more bucket!

Trust me- The thought has crossed my mind many a time!!!

By the time a find a good 'Pimp', I've usually spent more like $200-300!!!!!! And the 'Service' is questionable sometimes,..... I'm sorry, I couldn't pass it up- I had to!!!! Just messin' with ya!:D

That's a lot of good feedback a lot more then I expected. I appreciate it ill proly think about a little more and might end up with a mistking, is that the best option for one cage Mabe two later on that isn't going to cost an arm and a leg?
