Digging

Can anyone help me, I have a baby Chameleon who is 5 months old and he had started digging at the bottom of his tank.
In his tank he has coconut matting, plenty of food and the temp is just right too i think.
PLEASE HELP

Do you know for sure it is a boy? What kind of chameleon is it? If it is a boy, and if I read tank correctly as aquarium, what are your temps?

Can you post pictures of the enclosure and describe your husbandry?
Does "he" have the tarsal spur on his back feet?
How old is the animal?

-Brad

So there are definitely tarsal spurs on his back heels? If he is definitely a boy then I am not sure why he is digging. Sometimes they dig due to being too hot. Glass terrarium? Any pictures?

The only reasons I can think of for your chameleon's behavior is temperature or ventilation issues.
Be careful not to get him too hot in that glass enclosure.
80 degrees f. would be the absolute hottest I would be comfortable with and that should only be at the top.

do you know why he is digging at the time? is everything im doing ok, is set up.
its 70 in there at the moment and at night i tune off the lights and put his heat mat on. he only digs during the days, i spray him all the time and he drinks from his moving water tray.

What are the temps (bottom, middle and top)?
What lighting are you using and how and where are the fixtures positioned?

-Brad

You really need to fill out the "how to ask for help" link that I posted
Also read the thermoregulation article on the raising kitty site.

My guess at this point is that it is too hot in the upper parts of the enclosure and he's trying to get to a cooler place.

-Brad

Yes.

That's a lot of light/heat you have on that enclosure. I think you may want to raise the basking light, change the bulb wattage, or eliminate it altogether ... but check the top temp first.

-Brad

Oh ... and that heat mat can go bye bye

ok no heat mat at all? under the heat light it is over 90, should i change the watt of the light bulb?

I just got done reading that.

But I would say its too hot. What wattage are those bulbs?
