Need more specifics like age, red bar, blue bar, etc.I don't think that if the bars are the only thing dark it would be stress related. Is it your cham and if so can you post a pic? Or is it just a general question?

then yes, dark vertical bars often indicates the chameleon equivalent of stress, fear, anger

Mine will also exhibit dark vertical bars when he is in the presence of a female. When I had my pair together, he kept those dark bars from time he started head bobbing until several hours after separating them. I would guess excitement = stress.

Excitement. Not all dark colors means stress, fear or anger.
