cup feeding

Is it difficult to get a cham to cup feed? I have my cup setup in the front of the cage half way up the side. It is angled a bit down as to see in it better. The roaches pretty much stay in one spot and do not move. My new guy has only been here for 26 hours so far and was never cup fed. He is only 4.5 months old. I just Do not want a ton of roaches wondering around the cage and just hiding and coming out only at night. I have seen him drink, bask, and move about the cage. Right now he is walking around 3/4 of the way down the cage in the thicker areas. Do I need to move the cup to a different area? I have yet to see him go towards that area.

ps.. sorry for being a pest with new dad syndrome.. I know they take a while to eat at first. Just wondering about the placement.

It might take awhile for your cham to get use to the cup. Check out your cham for a few days and see where he likes to sit, then place the cup next to his favorite spot.

Either do what beeze said or listen up!

When I first got my chameleon I started the cup feeding because I didn't like the idea of letting the crickets run around. I don't hang the cup anywhere..I just hold it up to him, wait for him to eat and then take it away. He has eaten that way ever since he was 3months?

They should quickly come to any cup feeding..not saying they will but they should. but since the roaches dont move..I dont think he will start becoming interested in that cup. Try one roach and hold the cup up to him. Shake it lightly to get the roach moving...or something like that?

I have been feeding my three month old veiled off of tweezers while I've had him for a month, but just yesterday I started doing this. It works great!

Yes it does. It lets you know how much the cham eats and if any escape.

26 hours is barely time to adjust, so don't give up....while I have no issue with holding the cup up so the chameleon associates your hand with food, I also think there should be time when the cup is just there...the chameleon should learn to eat from the cup whether held or not. Why? Because you can't guarantee you will always be available to feed your chameleons and trust me, your neighbor's hand holding the cup is not the same. Your neighbor leaving the cup in "the place" and going away, however, would be the same as you leaving the cup in "the place" and going away.

Unexpected things happen. In my experience, the best way to keep the worst things from happening is to plan for them.

I agree on the extra cup in the cage for rushing days or when someone else feeds. I do have a cup/container for when my cham is being stubborn and wont eat from the other cup. I also have it for mornings when I have to be somewhere and don't have time to wait on him to get in eating mode.

wow, thank you all for the replies. I will try everything mentioned. I had a feeling I was doing the new dad syndrome thing. It seems he has found his sleeping spot. The past two night he has slept in the bottom quarter of the umbrella plant on the same spot. Yesterday he hung out down there the majority of the day and today he was down there when I woke up. Once I sat down at the desk his cage is on he slowly started to make his way up to the basking light and is currently there. Just new to all this..lol..I will give him some more time, I was freaked out yesterday though when he was in the bottom half of the cage. From all the things I read on here that is never a good sign, but I took it to still getting used to his surroundings and the stress of the move.
