Covering potting soil?

I am looking for an alternative to covering potting soil other than rocks. I was thinking of using calcium sand but don’t know the affects it would have on the plants and trees. Right now I am planning to keep them in pots but if I can find a lighter material than river rocks I will just plant them in the base I am going to build tomorrow. I am interested in hearing what others have used.

rubber mulch is the way to go and you can git the thick stuff and your set

You could use a piece of screen but veileds try to eat everything. Don't use sand or anything at all in the bottom of the cage.
