Constantly Basking?

Hey everyone my female veiled(Clea) has been recently basking a lot. I took the basking bulb away one day to see what the temp. will be, but she didn't like that at all. When i take the basking bulb away, she climbs on the screen and wants out of her cage but when the bulb is there, the basically lays there and basks. I am scared that she can be working an infertile clutch. What can i do and why is she doing this?

She wants out on her tree. Maybe you can hang her uv light over her tree and allow her to stay out more.

Why would basking all day be bad? I don't have a female so maybe it has something to do with that.

Stefan, veileds are notorious baskers, it is just what they do. You can't stop her from cycling eggs, you can only keep her from laying too often or from laying huge clutches. Don't take her basking bulb away, that is how she digests. If your house is like mine, with room temps of 75 or less, she needs the added heat.

Julirs said..."You can't stop her from cycling eggs, you can only keep her from laying too often or from laying huge clutches. They generally live to be 6 + years old...so I don't think I could be harming them. They have no basking light....just a Repti-sun 5.0 UVB light and a regular white fluorescent which keeps their cage temperatures in the low 80's (except for some times in the summer when the temperatures are higher.) I keep them on a diet...and that along with my supplementing, gutloading, etc. seems to stop reproduction. I have never had on become constipated or prolapse from straining.

CleatheChameleon...does she have a place to dig in her cage? Has she been drinking more than normal? Is she looking plumper?

Linda I follow your methods with good results, but Stefan's girl laid a fertile clutch. I keep my females inside here where room temps with a.c. are low 70's. I use low Watt bulbs for them to bask.

It would have been good to know that the chameleon had laid a fertile clutch...when was the clutch laid? How many eggs were in the clutch? How did the chameleon behave after she laid the clutch?

Females should be kept at 80 and do not need a basking light unless you are breeding.
My female loooves to bask but sometimes like today it gets hot in my area so i have to remove the basking light cause it gets to damn near 90 degrees:eek:

She laida clutch of 42. Right after she covered them up, she went and had a nice long drink. She didnt act strange after she laid at all.

Stefan-she laid in Dec right? Did she ever lay a retained clutch after that? Every Veiled I have had will lay twice after one breeding-at least. That is what I meant by you cannot stop her from cycling eggs. She very well may be getting ready to lay again-but don't worry. I know you do not keep her too warm or feed her to much.
