Concerned about not eating

Ok, I posted about a year ago about George. Now I am here again although this time I am not sure if I am just being overconcerened or not. George is about 1 year 2 months give or take a month. He is in a screened cage with three sides covered because temp and humidity would not stay up. Temp at top is about 90 degrees and about 70 near bottom. He has basking bulb and UVB lighting - I forget the type of light but it was recommended by this site (it's the one with the long skinny bulbs). He has lots to climb on also. I spray/mist him twice a day (although have increased this to 4-5 times recently). He eats primarily crickets (he's very picky eater) which are gut loaded with store bought cricket food, meal worms and superworms (last two are more treats). I have tried some veggies, and other bugs but he won't touch them. He has his lights on about 10 hours during the day then off at night plus I keep it dark. I'll partially cover cage if we are staying up later so the lights don't bother him.

George has grown and shed quite a bit of the past 2-3 months. I noticed he shed once a week for a good month. It's been a couple weeks and I think he is shedding again but appears to be having a harder time which is why I increased spraying him to 4-5 times a day (I always use warm water). He has not eaten in a week now. (About two weeks ago I bought 100 crickets in which about 75 died overnight. George had eaten a few live ones before a bunch died.) I bought new crickets and he has not touched one of them nor the meal worms or superworms since. Also, he had whitish stuff around one eye and was keeping it closed last week. He was not shedding so I thought maybe he had an infection. I had eye drops (from vet) from when he had a previous infection in his eye so I started using them and his eye looks much better. I noticed George has not pooped in 4-5 days either. Ok he just did! Yeah! The uriate part looks slightly yellowish/orange so I'll make sure he drinks today. He didn't drink much that I saw yesterday. He is moving around cage although maybe a bit less than normal. He's been a bit more aggressive also. I was not able to do the eye drops one day because he was obviously intent on trying to bite me! He's usually quite calm although I have not handled him much since last summer when I took him out of his cage to put him in an outdoor cage. I do reach in and clean his cage and pet him. He never even pays me much attention. He, also, appears to keep his eyes closed or half closed more unless I walk over to check on him then he'll open them. Am I being overly concerned? I attached a photo. It's not great as the lighting is not great in this room. Thanks! Traci

He looks good from the pic you provided. Sometimes they just refuse to eat certain foods or anything altogether. Have you tried feediing him any greens like Kale? I don't know what is in your store bought gutload. Which one are you using?. Bug Burger is a good one. What else do you gutload with? Any fruits and vegetables. Remember what you feed your feeders gets passed onto your chameleon like the food chain in nature. Do you use any type of multi vitamin that contains vitamin A? The reason I ask, is there is definitely some concern about your chameleon closing his eyes during the day. There is usually some underlying illness or a Vitamin A deficiency possibly. I am far more concerned about him not eating so much as I am about him closing his eyes.

  • I tried Kale a while ago and he would not touch it. I have to go shopping so I'll get some and try it again. The cricket food I buy is Fluker's High-Calcium Cricket Diet and Zoo Med Cricket Gut Load Block. I, also, give George vitamins and calcium. Forgot to add that. I use Retivite without D3 and Rep Cal Calcium. I dust crickets with these daily. Also have Calcium with D3 which I do twice a month. The vitamins say 99.910 IU per pound. I'll begin feeding the crickets veggies and fruits too. I was but stopped because I was getting lot of fruit flies. Any other suggestions for veggies or fruits that chameleons really like?? George has always been very picky. I tried some apple and shredded carrots the other day - he didn't touch them but the crickets did that were in his cage. I'm heading out shopping later so I'll pick up a variety for him. As for his eyes - seems to be keeping the one eye that I am putting eye drops in closed half way. The other eye has been open today or at least is when I check on him. I'm probably being parinoid because a year ago he was so sick when I first got him with parasites and lung infection. I'd run him into vet but the reptile vet in our area didn't even know what kind he was last time and said nothing was wrong! I had to diagnose him myself - take him back in to vet and explain to the non-reptile vet the symptoms who kindly did research for two hours and agreed with me! The other reptile vet is at UT (teaching college) and so far I am not impressed. Took another lizard in to them for emergency visit and the reptile vet never even came in. I saw someone else. So frustrating! I won't be getting another reptile because there just aren't any reputable vets in the area that I can find. :( Anyway I appreciate any advice or help. Thank you!

Update - I've watched George closely for past two days. He only closed his eyes when basking but not all the time. He opens them as soon as I walk over if they are closed. I have given him Kale, pieces of strawberries, grapes and hard boiled egg. He hasn't touched any of it! PICKY! He did eat a cricket yesterday and made noises after. I'm not sure if he has a sore in his mouth or if he was mad because I was watching him. It's the first time he's really done this. He has been very annoyed at me and has opened his mouth at me in warning although I haven't been able to see in it as he's turned the wrong way. He's drinking good, coloring is fine and he's moving around throughout the day. I gave him small crickets in a cup today. I am thinking if he has a sore in his throat or mouth then maybe the small ones would be easier to eat. I'm not as worried but wondering if he does have a sore in his mouth or throat is there anything that I can do or will it heal on it's own? His eyes are looking better. I've started drops in his other eye as it's getting white stuff around it also. He's also starting to shed again! I don't think the eye stuff is skin though. He has it in the AM only. He'll either rub it off or I take a wet cotton swab, after I spray him with warm water, and gently rub them. He seems to like this and the white stuff comes right off. Pretty sure the antibiotic eye drops are clearing it up as his other eye looks much better. Anyone else had this issue? It almost seems like a conjunctivitis. Can lizards get that?? Thanks!

Update #2 - He just ate a large cricket!!! No noise strange noises this time. Chowed it right down. So I am guessing I am just over concerned! :) What can I say, I spent two weeks nursing him to health after I got him a year ago so I tend to be a bit over protective! It was warm out yesterday so I took his cage outside and he seemed to enjoy that so maybe a little fresh air was what he needed. I am guessing his agressive attitude lately is becuase he's shedding. He's generally this way when he is although does open his mouth to me! Stinker! I am still wondering about his eyes - not concerned but wondering if others have had whitish gunk around their veiled chameleon's eyes?
