When you look around for a new chameleon you will see photos of the chams sire. But does anyone know how much of the sires color patten passes down to the offspring? When you see chams for sale they very rearly show a picture of the mother or a picture of the mothers sire.

So when you breed chams together, and try to sell them, do you know the new babies will be little clones of the sire? How do you know what they will become? Does any one understand what Im trying to figure out?

Thanks

There are many factors that determine what a clutch will turn out like. Were the male and female of the same locale? Was the male a pure blood locale to start with. Even with both parents coming from the same locale there will be offspring that dont look like the sire. If he's a truly stunning male then he will have a few males from each clutch that will be outstanding and the rest will be pet quality. Its similar to breeding dogs/cats. Some will resemble the stud others wont. If the female comes from a great bloodline then your chances are more of the offspring will be of better than average quality. Unless you purchase an older holdback from a clutch you wont know his/her true potential for 6 or more months. Its a roll of the dice.

So we cant really go by the sire. Well how does the breeding and selling work? If I got a female of the same local and made the cluch pure bloods. Would I get a good idea of what the babies will look like by comparing the sire and the mothers sire? My male is from SoKool from screameleons. So I guess I can only hope he will turn out like the sire.

I used to breed mini schnauzers. The mother and father were both salt & pepper color. But her puppies were salt/pepper, black/silver and solid white. So I learned then that the colors of the parents in that breeding did not matter. All though there was more salt/pepper puppies in the litter than there was the other 2 colors.

So if I breed a blue bar male and female, will I get all blue bar babies? Or will some have red bars?

Sorry for all the questions. Thanks

I see what your saying. If you breed two purple bar ambanjas together your going to get purple bar offspring but you will also get some that arent as purple and look more red barred than others. And some may look more blue barred. All you can do is get the best quality breeders that have the traits that you are looking for & go for it. Looking at the sires parents and the dames sire can give you a good general idea what they should look like though. Your gonna have some you can sell for big $$$ and others just arent going to be as good. Some wont have the nice clean lines and edges on their bars that knowledgeable people look for. Thats what I look for anyway nice clean bars and lateral lines. I dont like the muddied look you see on some of the pet quality panthers. Jmp preference.

To increase the number of male offspring that look as you desire them to, be aware not only of the sire's looks, but also his sire and siblings. Know what the mothers brothers and father look like. Breeders should be able to provide photos of more than just the sire.
