We took Thaxter out on the deck to bask today (the weather's been beautiful these past couple weeks). He sat on my husband for awhile, then wandered onto the rail that goes around the deck. After he'd spent some time wandering and sitting in different places, he'd settled down about two feet from me. A mourning dove came along and, to my considerable surprise, came in for a landing right next to/behind Thaxter; at the last moment the bird did a double-take ("Egad! What's this?"), aborted the landing and flew off. Thaxter seemed wholly unperturbed.

So - birds and other beasties can turn up, even when you're right there (though this did seem rather an oblivious dove). But Outdoor Time is too valuable, especially as my guy gets older, so we'll continue to hang out on the deck and just keep a sharp eye out.

Thanks for sharing. I'm so glad that nothing happen to Thaxter. I take my guys out just about ever evening and will be even more careful now.

haha at least it was a mourning dove they eat seeds not chams:D. i was able to get my panther out a week or two ago on a particularly warm day despite the weather being really cold lately (anyone on long island knows what im talkin about) and a sparrow landed right next to him at least two times he hardly reacted really funny but just goes to show you anything can happen if you arent paying attention.

Bugboy, LI weather has been the worst this year

Did we get a summer this year? Oh yeah, it did hit 90 twice and I don't think we've had rain in 2 days.
I was hoping to get my recently acquired chams to enjoy a bit of natural sunlight, but the weather has just been too cold.
I guess I shouldn't really complain--so long as we remain hurricane-free

Did we get a summer this year?

NO!!!! i havent been able to get him out for sooooo long. i was able to get him outside for A COUPLE of days but that was IT!!!

did your newly aquired chams come from the white plains show?

No, we had gone to PA for a few days vacation and we brought them home as souvenirs ;)
I had a couple of adult Senegals more than 15 years ago, at a time when Senegals were supposed to die from parasites within a month or so.
We kept them alive for around 4 years.
The kids have Beardies, but I have always loved chameleons and finally decided to take the plunge, again.
I figured that I did OK by the Senegals, so a Fischer's and a Jackson's might not be doomed in my care.
If you have a vet that you really trust with chameleons, I'd love to know about him.

if you know the south huntington area you would know where i work (selmers pet land) and if you know the plainview area you may have heard of old country animal clinic. i have a friend who has worked at selmers for about 5 years and is an intern at this vet. the vet's name is dr. monaco and from what ive heard he is the best on the island.......but who knows what that means. ive been to him once and he was pretty good he gave me everything i needed right away but my cham has not improved so now i have to call him and prob need to spend MORE money but there's really not much i can do about it. i posted a similar response on a different thread, too lazy to find it though. pretty sure its in general discussion under recommended li vets.

The fact that thia was only a dove makes you very lucky. Birds of pray are very good at what they do. This means being able to dive in on potential pray at over 100 mph without making a sound. Do a little research on various herp forums and you can find plenty of instances of herp owners having their beloved pet snatch right out of their hands before they even had a chance to blink. Bottom line, never EVER sun your cham out of a cage. You are NOT faster than a hawk or whatever.
