Cheaper to Build or to Buy

It depends on what you mean by "large". I just found two 2x2x4 enclosure on Craigslist for $100. That's pretty cheap to me! ;)

I think it would be cheaper if you don't go fancy with it. Once you start customizing things for your own ease it becomes expensive. It honestly is like tomato tomato in this instance.

I agree with everyone else, I have found some great deals at reptile expos for complete setups. I bought a complete setup, lights, plants, supps, spray bottle, & dripper for $115 with a small cage, and $125 with a large cage from amazing blue reptiles. At LLL you can purchase half glass, half screen large cage for $109. But if you build your screen cage you can save money, but then you have an initial investment of tools, supplies and risk making an error. I am going to build my outdoor cages, and an indoor cage just to try. I'll keep everyone updated on the cost and of course pics. Check out youtube for directions on building screen cages. The real cost is the customization of cages like jungle gyms, vines, plants, digital temp/humidity, misters, drainage, etc. It's addicting. Good luck, hope this helped.

Once you get over 2x2x4 Cages go from $100 shipped to $400+. At that point it might be better to build, or modify existing items. Ive had good luck with old display cases, troughs, and even a phone booth for a certain iguana. If i was rich i would try to covert one of those old fotmat sites.

It's almost always cheaper to buy but at the same time you get what you pay for. I am not a fan of screen, I use it, but I prefer mesh and you are generally building your own if you use mesh.

You are on to a great idea there. I have been looking into gazebos and adapting them to an outside group enclosure.
