Chameleons are supposed to explore... mine could care less.

So I have had Floyd for over a year now, and he's been truly free ranging for about 4-5 months I'd say. I have only seen him out of his cage, with the blinds being an exception, about 3-4 times. He just stays in his free range. Not that I am complaining, but I know my old Jackson's, and other people's chameleons, chameleons explore like crazy. He seems to be cautious when I enter the room, unless I am holding a worm or cricket then he acts like I don't even exist and snatches it up. Does anyone else have this occurrence?

When i rescued my veiled his cage wasn't insanely small, but small. Now he's in a 2*2*4, and he doesn't move very much... he COULD be in a 2*2*2 and never notice the difference.

Lol my guy can scale the bottom of the cage to the top of his umbrella plant in 5 seconds. He LOVES to explore :)

So, after posting this I have seen him out of it twice. Maybe he is finally, after 1.5 years, becoming more comfortable with me. Not only did he leave his free range area, he crawled right up on my when i was on my computer sitting on my bed. It's a nice change.

that is great!
i think that just like us, these are all individual personalities.
some seem gregarious some seem cautious.
and we just have one real option...

patience:):):)

My male stays in 1 spot most of the time esp. When he was younger. But now that he's older he explores his cage more. I think that when we get our place we might let them free range. My little girl rarely explores too.

When I had the free range room with 6 chameleons (4 panthers, 1 Jackson's, 1 veiled) only the veiled, Jackson's, and one of the panthers would step down to wander about, the remaining three panthers were happy as clams staying in their free range.

The one panther wanderer was interesting because he didn't really leave to explore, he would leave to patrol what he thought was an extension of his territory. So every single day, at the exact same time, he would walk out, climb the TV in the living room, look out over the room for a few hours, and then just walk right by. He never went anywhere else, just to the TV and back.

The veiled, on the other hand, since she was female was always on the move looking for more food. So much so that she became bossy with the boys, trying to intimidate them out of their food so she had to be separated by herself. And then would still try to find a way back to their free range to steal their food lol.

All my guyz are different, Squee will often bolt up my arm and up the vines of the free range as though he were running from a fire!! then he will stop, look around, look at me with a look like, 'oh, now what do I do?' :D

Noogie will often wait a few seconds, anaylizing the situation, then climb on my hand and up the free range slowly, stopping every few feet to look around and decide were to go next.
Noogie is the only one I need to supervise because he goes everywhere, even the floor, which can get him in all kinds of trouble, not to mention, very hard to find!!

Smeagie actually makes a racket and fuss begging to come out, then he bolts up the free range, looking back at me the whole way like he is expecting me to change my mind and put him back!!

Smidget doesn't free range yet, he isn't even 'hand feed' tame yet.
He is slow to tame, but he is getting better slowly.
Need extra patience with him ;)
