Chameleon dropped

We have a young male panther chameleon, about 4 1/2 months old. He's been doing well. My son was feeding him and went to remove the dish in which we feed him crickets. He thought the chameleon was sitting on the branch but was attached to the bowl instead. When he pulled the bowl out, the chameleon dropped to our hardwood floor, about a five foot drop. He is black with his tongue sticking out, laying in his side. Occasionally draws his tongue in/out to some degree and his mouth will open or closed little. There is no nearby herpetologist vet. We have the heat lamp on but he is lower in the tank to keep from getting too warm. Is he in shock? What else can we do? Is he dead? My son is beside himself.

I'm am so sorry to hear that your boy took a bad fall. It sounds like he needs a good vet if you want to save him. Where do you live? I might be able to recommend one.

I am so very sorry this has happened. Give your son a hug--he needs one. These kinds of accidents do happen, and if they fall just the wrong way, they can do trauma to the lungs and cause other internal injuries. Other times, they can fall and suffer no injury whatsoever.
