Chamaeleo Hoehnelii Care and Husbandry

I recently acquired a male high casque chameleon and was wondering what kind of experiences others
have had with this particular species. I have done some research on the species but I would like to hear from some others with first hand experience with care, husbandry, feeding, and breeding. Any advice you could give would be helpful also.

I have a male, 6 months old.
He requires alot of water.
I supplement with repashy all in one, every other feeding.
Right now he is still in his baby cage, but I am going to upgrade him to a 2x2x4 cage in th next couple months.
I keep his temps lower, around 80, and he loves it.
I would not recommend housing together, unless the cage is very big. while i have not foudn them to be an aggresive species, you dont want breeding to happen on a regular basis, and you dont want them harrasing each other.

i have a female who will be a year jan 25th i think. she is very sweet and never shows any agression at all towards me or clair (a female veiled that comes to visist her) i FR 2/3 of my chams and she does well like this. shes very small and eats almost everything i offer. she likes to stay in one spot most of the day; however, will move a little here and there. i keep temps at a max of 80 and a humidifer right next to her FR as she requires freqents mistings and a cooler more humid enviroinment. she doesnt eaty a ton mabey 3-4 1/4 crikets a day. waxworms are her favorite but she doesnt get them very often. she also likes butter and calci worms and flys.

hope this helps any. :)

also- there is a member here who keeps a hoe pair together. i hope im not wrong but i think the user is iwantone. goodluck

I have kept 1.1 together. I have also kept newborns with mom for several weeks. It has been interesting seeing the various interactions, but I would only keep them together if you have a very large, well planted habitat with lots of quality basking sites. They do best with a temp drop at night. Mine have experienced night drops into the high 30's (usually the 50's), but they must have basking sites that allow them to get their temps up into the mid 80's during the day. This rhythm is important but they are tolerant of variations as long as they have dialed in basking sites they can count on. In the wild, this species ranges over a variety of habitats from lowish to quite high altitudes but is usually described and best kept as a "montane" species. Mine prefer "winged" prey such as flies and moths the most, but they also eat crickets and dubia nymphs. Automated water several times a day will ensure they are always hydrated even in lower humidity environments.

Thanks a lot for the advice guys. I will post some pics of him soon. I am really enjoying working with this species.

I uploaded a picture of his terrarium. It is a oceanic with screen sides and tri-fold top with screen in the middle and 24x18x24. Would this cage be large enough to keep him with a female?

Not for long.
When full ygrown, they can get to be 10 inches long. maybe if they are tiny, 6 months of less. but even then, i wouldnt do it.
Also, please remove that substrate. it can cause an impaction if they eat it. and provide more folaige for hiding.

Alrighty, will do. What kind of substrate works best for yours? And I added some more plants. Want him to be happy. :)

Yeah no problem. Here's one. Do you have any pictures of your Crested Chameleons? That's another species I would love to have and I actually found some at the last show I attended but the vendor that had them is known for having wild caught/diseased animals. They looked to be in very poor shape too. :(

Pretty male you have.

personally no substrate should be used. it doesnt look the greatest but news paper or paper towels is a recommended choice.

Id take back the current cage and buy a 18x18x36 screen cage or 24x24x48.

Be sure to clean the water fall frequently.

If you dont mind filling this form out. https://www.chameleonforums.com/how-ask-help-66/
