Calcium Syrup

Ok my chameleon was prescribed to calcium syrup, calcionate 1.8 GM/5 Calcium Glubionate Syrup, to be exact.

Ive only gave her one dose simply, because she couldnt keep her eyes open after words. I thought that maybe it was from the stress of taking her out and getting her to open up for it, because i never handle her. She has been sleeping for two days now. This morning i woke up and she was on the floor sleeping, im guessing she fell. This is really bothering me, she was doing better before the medication.

I know i should take this up with my vet but he dont seem to be much help. (he went to deer camp right after he prescribed the medicine so i cant talk to him when i need to. I will be speaking with him ASAP just want to see if anyone one here could be more help.

I guess i am posting this because i dont know what to do. Is this maybe not the right stuff to give her for MBD? I already have over 70 dollars in vet bills and she seems to be doing worse than she was when i took her.

I had her back to eating again, and she was moving around a little, then gave her medication and it all fell through the floor. She is in worse shape than before. :(

What should i do?

Calcium gluconate is usually the one people use here.
But, in your case, it seems that she might need a calcium injection (But, I am afraid that the stress might overwhelmed her).

So, try to get her to a different vet.
here is a good place to search for one nearby your area.

Since she kept falling, you might want to move her to a smaller cage or have some kind of a safety net to avoid her breaking anymore legs.

What type of uvb light do you use?

from the sound of it, i think she is in a critical moment. :(
I hope the best for you and your chameleon...

im using a 18" zoo med 10.0 floresent tube, also have two twist in style uvb light as well. One being a 10.0 and the other being a 5.0

I talked to another vet and she said to put her a an equarium with temp being 90 and high humidity.

I took her to the bathroom while i had the shower running for the steam, she was lifeless. I held her in there for 10-15 mins tried to put her back into her cage and she wouldnt even grab onto her branches. I put her into a tote misted well and put her light on top because i dont have a aquarium.

I called the vet back and told her how lifeless she was and she asked if i wanted to have her put down:(

Should i have her put down?, the vet also said they can make huge recoveries.

3 uvb lights seems to be an overkill, Vince.
you will end up burning her with UV radiation.

you just need one lamp. Turn off all the twist UVB lights (compact) and leave the 10.0 reptisun tube on. Lift it up about 12 inches from the cage.

Can you post a pic of her here? Also post a pic of her enclosure as well.
With the pic, we could see better of her actual condition.

But, from your description of her, I am somewhat leaning toward your vet suggestion.
Before doing anything rash, post her pic first.
I'm sorry it is always sucks to hear this kind of suggestion :(

You need to turn off the twist lights RIGHT NOW. Do not put her in an equarium, but keep her in a screen enclosure. Give her a couple of branches on the floor, maybe a very short piece of fake leaves so she can't fall from anything but will have some cover.

There are probably hundreds of replies here on why the twist lights are not recommended for chameleons. It can damage their eyes. There is a good chance your cham won't open eyes because of this. Normal day temps for your cham should be in the 70-75 degree range with a basking light (regular light bulb) that creates a corner where the temps are about 85 degrees. Continue to mist her and watch for her to lap up a bit of water. I would try a shower again tonight.

Do you have a pic of your cham? Why do you think it has MBD? Please post a pic so you can get some more help along the MBD lines. Please don't use the twist lights, aquarium or temps in the 90's for your cham. Those things can finish her at this point.

I took her to a different vet, she said that it would be in the best interest to have her put down. She had an infection and bad MBD. So that is what i did, i couldn't watch her suffer like she was anymore.

Why do i think she had MBD? Because she had swollen joints, and the vet agreed that is what it was. She had MBD not because of bad lighting or lack of supplement but because she had babies at a young age making her weak and susceptible for it. And before the pregnancy im guessing she wasnt fed well enough, simply because i know how most pet stores are. And petsmart where i got her, didnt even know she was pregnant. I had her for 1 month and she gave birth.

Now i would know if i was buying a pregnant cham but, she was my first. I had read things telling me to watch out for runny poo, mouth infections, closed eyes, ect. when buying. But never worried about buying one that was pregnant.

When i bought her she was bigger than i expected, i just thought that she was older. All they said when they sold her to me was, shes bigger than most of them that we get...

I only used those twist in lights simply because the trained pros at petsmart said they would be just fine. (some trained pros)

When i noticed her joints were swelling i bought the 18" florescent tube for some extra UVB and started supplementing even more. This is what the vet at petsmart told me to do. The swelling was looking like it was going down and then she fractured a back leg.

I just recently took her in and was prescribed calcium syrup. Gave her one dose and she could not keep her eyes open to save her life. I thought that the stress was maybe a bit overwhelming is why she was doing this. She was closed eyes for one day. I called the vet and they said that it was maybe from the stress as well. She went another day acting the same. I put held her in the bathroom while the shower was running and she didnt have any energy. I tried puting her back into her cage and wouldnt grab a branch, she just laid on my hand eyes closed.

So if you think i should have done something different please let me know because i would more than greatly appritiate it. Since i still have five of her babies that i havnt sold yet and one of them we kept for ourselves.

If you care she had 18 babies, we had 50% success.

Also, i would like to know more about these twist lights, this is what i have used on the babies since day one.
