Best sealant to use on wood?

My biggest thing right now is the back drop. Im really set on it not being mesh, too a point of considering purchasing acrylic, but that stuff is pricey.

Do not I repeat absolutely do not use acrylic. Unless you plan to use a super thick (and super expensive) piece, it will warp like crazy from moisture. It's fine to use for aquariums because at least 3 sides are welded to other sides which all cross brace one another. I have had numerous experiences with acrylic tanks and vivariums. The lids/doors have always warped to the point of being useless.

I think plywood is easily your best option - just make sure it's coated extremely well. I just made another post about this, but despite numerous thick applications of PU sealant and silicone, the wood at the bottom has started to rot in some areas. Of course those areas were in constant, 24-7 contact with drainage water.
