Can anyone and everyone who uses superworms please direct me in the best method of gutloading these guys? Any and all comments welcome :D

I just put them in substrate of super chow. I give them vegetables and bug burger for their water source.

Sandra's recipe is the bomb! I love it. A few things I would add to her mixture are hemp seeds, spirulina, and ground marigold flowers.

I like the marigolds because of their high antioxidant levels, personally. I actually use calendula because of it (and not just any old marigold.)

sorry that I'm perhaps taking this thread off topic - would you PM me with more info about marigolds?
I love learning something new! I've never considered using marigold or pot marigold as anything other than a pretty thing in the garden LOL
I grow calendula along the side garden!

oh that's interesting! tell me more about why you add those ?

Absolutely and with complete respect here: Seriously, to me you are a gut load pioneer. :)

A: Spirulina:

Spirulina Powder Benefits ( scroll down to 8, as it is most relevant to this topic)

Spirulina is considered a super food because it is a potent source of nutrients. It contains as much as 70% protein, and is a good source of chlorophyll, B-complex vitamins, vitamin E, and iron. Spirulina also contains more beta-carotene than carrots as well as the essential fatty acid known as GLA.

Used since ancient times for its many nutritional benefits, spirulina continues to be used today as an antiviral, an antioxidant, a lipid-lowering agent and as an aid for weight loss. Spirulina (spirulina plantensis), is a type of blue-green algae that grows in warm, alkaline waters.

Following is a list of the many benefits of using spirulina

1 - Anti-aging - Easily digested, powdered spirulina is filled with antioxidants. The beta carotene in spirulina is beneficial for good vision and eye health. Iron-rich and a low fat protein, spirulina can be an ideal meat substitute. Sprirulina also builds lactobacillus in the gut, and aids in the assimilation of food as well as elimination - which helps relieve constipation.

2 - Immunity - For strengthening the immune system, spirulina powder helps the body produce additional red and white blood cells. It also helps the body's natural ability to cleanse and detoxify.

3 - During Pregnancy - Spirulina powder is a beneficial supplement to use during pregnancy because it provides protection against iron-deficiency anemia and provides needed protein.

4 - For Infants and Children - Spirulina has been studied as a nutritional food supplement to prevent malnutrition. Spirulina is also a good source of iron for children with iron-deficiency anemia.

5 - Type 2 Diabetes - Spirulina is also being studied for type 2 diabetes mellitus because it shows promise for reducing fasting blood sugar levels.

6 - Nasal Allergies - Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, spirulina powder has shown improvements in certain aspects of nasal allergies.

7- For weight loss - Spirulina has long been marketed as an appetite suppressant.

8 - Pets - Spirulina powder is sold as a supplement for fish, birds, dogs, cats and other pets. Dogs and cats taking spirulina have healthier skin, a more lustrous coat and fresher breath. Spirulina is also added to many premium aquarium foods to improve growth, color, and survival rates.

B: Marigold

Not all marigolds are created equal. The National Institutes of Health explains that the marigold you find in most home gardens is of the tagetes variety, which are purely ornamental. The marigold variety that delivers health benefits is calendula. The flowers of the calendula marigold have been used for centuries for their health benefits.
High Antioxidant Content
Marigolds contain numerous antioxidant carotenoids that give the petals their bright orange and yellow colors. An antioxidant is a compound that helps protect the cells from damage caused by free radicals, or hazardous molecules. Free radicals are the by-products of normal body functions or environmental factors such as cigarette smoke or pollution. Free radicals can damage cells to the point that they damage DNA, and can lead to disease and various forms of cancer. High intake of antioxidants helps combat free radical damage. The primary carotenoids in marigolds are lutein and zeaxanthin, often paired together, and lycopene. The Linus Pauling Institute reports that lutein and zeaxanthin are the only antioxidants that are found in the retina of the eye, where they protect the eye from the development of cataracts and macular degeneration. Lycopene is reported to reduce the risk of prostate cancer and heart disease.

Cancer Protection
The antioxidants in marigolds help fight and prevent cancer, according to a study in the October 1998 issue of The Journal of Nutrition. In this study, researchers from Washington State University examined the effects of lutein, an antioxidant extracted from marigolds, on breast cancer tumors. The results of their study show that lutein not only reduced the number of tumors in the breast, it also prevented new cancer cells from developing. Researchers found that even in small dietary amounts, the lutein from marigolds had a positive effect. Marigold has also been found effective against leukemia, colon and melanoma cancer cells.
Wound Healing
One of marigold's folk uses has been in the area of wound healing. Rubbed on burns, scrapes and irritated skin, marigolds provide relief. When tested on rats, researchers in Brazil found that one of the mechanisms for wound healing comes from marigolds having the ability to promote the growth of new skin tissue, as well as new blood vessels that feed the skin. In the February 2011 issue of the Brazilian medical journal Acta Cirurgica Brasileira researchers also state that marigold acts as an anti-inflammatory due to the presence of other compounds, including triterpenes and steroids.
How To Use
Calendula marigold petals can be dried and used as a spice in place of saffron, steeped in hot water for a tea or used fresh on salads. Keep in mind that marigolds are an herbal product, and as with any herb there is a risk of adverse reactions or side effects. If you are currently being treated for a medical condition or are on any medications, speak to your doctor before consuming any herbal products, even marigolds.

C: Hemp Seeds

The Many Uses of Hemp

Hemp is one of the most useful plants on Earth.

For thousands of years, humans have used parts of the hemp plant for food, textiles, paper, fabric, and fuel oil. Today, modern processing technologies have made it possible to create alternatives to gasoline, plastic, and other petroleum products that can help the human race lessen its reliance on polluting and expensive fossil fuels.

The hemp plant is a renewable resource that can be produced domestically. It grows quickly, naturally resists plant diseases, requires little weeding, thrives in most climates, and enriches the soil it grows in.

Here are some of its most important applications:

Food and Nutrition
Hempseeds and hemp oil are highly nutritious and delicious. Hempseeds are an excellent source of protein, minerals, and dietary fibre. Hemp is the only plant that contains all of the essential fatty acids and amino acids required by the human body. These essential nutrients affect a variety of body functions, including metabolism, the skin, mood, behaviour, the brain, and the heart.

Many people eat fish and take fish oil supplements to get these essential fats, however concerns around over fishing and the chemical contamination of modern fish have made many choose to switch to hemp instead. It is an especially excellent option for vegetarians.

Hemp is also good for animals, and some veterinarians recommend including it in the diets of pets and livestock. In Europe, fishermen sprinkle hempseed on the water as an effective bait. When hempseed is included in bird seed, songbirds will pick it out of the mix as they prefer it over other seeds.

Hemp foods are becoming more and more popular as the public discovers the nutritional benefits and culinary uses of hemp.

thanks guys for all the useful info... where can I find this stuff at? Esp. the kelp... and can I just go out and pick dandelion leaves(what about pesticide's and other variable factors)...

For the dandelions you can pick those in your own yard if you don't fertilize or poison them they should be fine?
The cheapest I've found kelp is at bulkfoods.com

I keep a patch of dandelion beside my lettuce patch :) Its good for people too LOL
Yes, from your lawn is okay if you are sure there are not herbicides/pesticides or fertilizers in use

I buy dried powdered kelp locally (there is a producer on the island I live on) but you can buy it from plenty of healthfood stores - bulk makes sense. Make sure it wasnt harvested in Asia - poor quality control there.
If you live near an ocean like I do, bull kelp washes up on the shore after big storms - use the fronds (very well rinsed) - easy to dehydrate.

I have kelp for sale in the classifieds.

Anywho, you got a good link to info about the marigolds/calendula. It's good for people and lizards :)

I just bought some dinofuel raptor edition (the one with marigold)... should that be a sufficient source of marigold? Is Dinofuel legit? looks to be to me anyways :)

Yes, this is the good marigold. It is Calendula officinalis imported from egypt.

Aside from containing a powerful antioxidant, Marigold (zeaxanthin) can enhance colors the same way Astaxanthin does.

Thank you. I am glad there are educated people like yourself. I can't seem to drill in to some peoples heads enough of the power of plants.
