Bearded Pygmy chameleons

I was wondering how hard it is to breed bearded pygmy chameleons. What are the conditions I need to make them breed. Also does anyone know a good way of telling apart the males from the females? Thanks

Mine had no trouble breeding, but I lost all babies of my clutch of three. Have you bred reptiles before? Do a search on the forums -- there is a lot of info on pygmies. After reading, ask anything that isn't covered. :)

Generally the males have longer tails than the females, it is pretty obvious if you see the two next to each other but if you see them at different times it is a little trickier to sex them. My males seem to have more of a patter and the females have a single lateral stripe but that is not a good indicator of sexing at all. I keep 1 male to every 3 females in an enclose, usually a 50-60 gallon enclosure for a group of four and they breed on their own. You just need to make sure your females are not being bred too much by the male and do your best to try and find the eggs in the cage. I never can seem to find eggs even as clean out time and have little ones appear randomly on a stick or on the screen eating all the locust nymphs. It is best to acquire captive bred specimens because there will not be a parasite issue from the start or an acclimation issue. Plus they begin to breed very young, I've had 3-4 month old females lay clutches when I thought they were way to small still. I usually don't breed them til 6 months of age or older though just for their sake and keep them to 1-2 clutches per year. But I'm keeping them as pets and trying to make their lives comfortable and not always being weighed down or having their lifespan shortened by pregnancy. Good luck.

The babies are a little difficult but if you get it down you shouldn't have too much trouble. Out of the 34 that have hatched out only 3 haven't made it until they are out of my care, which is usually 4-6 months old. Just have lots of iny silkworms, pinheads, and roach nymphs available. Mantis nymphs and freshly hatched hornworms work great too.
