Are moths I find in my yard okay?

I see alot of moths near my lights and am wondering if they're okay? I have hundreds of lightning bugs in my yard and know they're poisonous to chameleons. If somehow bugs in my yard ate them and I fed it to my cham would it be harmful?

there is always a great debate over feeding wild caught bugs due to the fact they could be poisonous or possibly have been exposed to pesticides. A member brought up a good point about the pesticides and pointed out that if they are flying around and moving around in a healthy manner, then most likely they have not been exposed or they probably would be dead! As far as the moths, I have had some get in my patio and have seen my chameleon eat them and so far so good! Try and do some research on poisonous moths in your state and see what you come up with. I live in Fla and could not find with any info but, found in my research that the Tiger moth is poisonous. I have never seen any down here. They are black with bright yellow stripes. I guess you just have to use your own descretion when it comes to this.

Okay but there is still the questions if the bugs I feed my cham ate some of the numurous amounts of lightning bugs could it hurt my cham?

well, good question, but I guess you will have to research what wild caught feeders you plan to feed and what they eat! We don't have lightning bugs in Fla atleast not in south florida where I live anyways.

Moths do not typically eat much of anything, so I wouldnt be worried about a moth eating a lightening bug.

Post a picture of the moth type you want to use, and perhaps someone can identify it as safe.

I use wc moths periodically without issue.

Any insect vicious enough to hunt down and eat a firefly is probably too mean to offer to a chameleon anyway. I could imagine a spider might occasionally catch a firefly but I wouldn't recommend feeding them anyway because they bite. On there it says that you shouldnt use Grasshoppers but I disagree because if you cup feed them or feed them with your hand then you dont have the problem of them chewing threw the leafs. If your lizard is willing to eat an earth worm is it ok.
