Appropriate drinking water

I have been buying the gallon jugs of purified water for Larry and they cost about $.80 each. That isn't hugely expensive, but given how much water he gets, it adds up pretty quickly over time. Is boiling tap water or letting it sit out for a number of hours to dechlorinate an alternative?

Larry I have read that boiling does get rid of Chlorine but I have read conflicting times of anywhere from 5 minutes to 20 minutes. I guess the only way would be to test the water after you do it.You could probably just use the test that you do on aquarium water to check for Chlorine levels I would assume. I have never used anything but tap water so far. The breeder I bought him from never mentioned anything in her care sheet about using, distilled, reverse osmosis etc so I never have. I am NOT saying however that it would not be better for your chameleon.

You can refill one of those gallon bottles with tap water, and let it sit out for 24 hours with cap/top off. I place my bottles out in the sun for quicker break down of chlorinates. Then your good to go/use.

Thats good to know. I live in Tallahassee and the water out of the tap has so much chlorine you can actually smell it if you try, so I have been a bit cautious as to what he drinks.

As I understand it, it depends on several issues. One is your personal "fear factor". If you're comfy with your tap water, then it's probably okay to use it straight out of the tap.

Another factor is how the tap water is purified. While Chlorine can be evaporated out of water fairly easily, many cities use another chemical (I don't remember the name at the moment) which does not dissipate that way.

So, you would need to contact the group that handles your city's water to find out what they use.

I don't know how it is in the rest of the world, but here, we have "water stores" that sell water which has been put through a reverse osmosis system to purify it. I think it works out to something like 15 cents a gallon for us.

You can also get one of those charcoal filter systems that either hook to the tap or are in a pitcher.

I use reverse osmosis water
