Any Uroplatus Keepers?

Hey everyone,

While preparing for 4.2 U. Phanasticus and 1.2 U. Lineatus next week, the thought came to mind of who else on these boards also keep Uroplatus. I've already found and registered at the more popular gecko forums but they more exposure, the more colloboration. :)

I'm setting up an rmpty 65 Gal tank for the lineatus but we're still on the fence on what to do for the Phanasticus. We're actually looking at a taller enclosure and found a glass cabinet at Ikea that I think I can make work for them. The only issue is, I'm not sure if they'll take advantage of the full height and whether or not I should consider something with more of a "foot print". Our intention was to remove the glass shelves and place one taller plant complimented with a good deal of grape vines ranging from top to bottom.

Think this will fly?

I have a ton of Bamboo to be cleaned and baked for the Lineatus. So far this has been a fun research project and we're both excite dto start working with them hands on. Any of you work with Uroplatus?

Hi
at the moment I have
2.2 U. Sikorae
1.1 U. Phantasticus
2.0 U. Guentheri
1.1 U. Ebenaui
2.1 U. Pietschmanni

Hey bosco,
Nice variety you have. I gather these are popular, yet not as available in the EU as they are here in the states.

Do you have any thoughts on a vertical enclosure for the Phantasticus? The Lineatus are taken care with the 65 gal tank. I'm in the process of baking the bamboo to ensure there are no parasites and planting the vivarium for them. If I need to, I'll acquire a normal tank, but I think the vertical enclosure would look very interesting setup as a vivarium for the Phantasticus.

Do you have any pictures of your setups and animals?

Thanks,

Luis

My brother has some phantasticus and Henkel's - A few eggs from the Henkel's right now.

I would love to get either Henkel's or fimbriatus - probably go for the ones he hatches out.

I'm pretty sure all Uros prefer a bigger footprint with some hight as to all hight and little foot print. I think a cheap used 55 gallon would be better than a cabinet. Unless I'm wrong about the foot print.

Edit: My bad I was thinking uromastyx. I glazed over when I saw scientific names. LOL

I just got a male ebenaui a few weeks ago, coolest little guy!

I'd love some phantasticus and pietschmanni.

I have him in a 10g exo-terra with bark as a drainage layer and 3-4 inch layer
of sphagnum moss that I keep very moist at all times (but not wet).

He eats more than I thought he would!

Make sure to keep them cooler, treat them like montane chameleons,
room temperature and a drop at night.

Madagascar has some cool lizards, that's for sure! It's funny how islands always
have such a diverse reptile and amphibian population, like in the Pacific, such
as Australia, and of course Madagascar. There's some neat stuff down in the
Caribbean too.

When you can't walk away to another part of land, you're sort of stuck to evolve into whatever it is you can on such a small island. It is pretty amazing. :)

What size is you Ebenaui?

Luis

Hi Luis,
all my Uroplatus enclosure are verticals, but sorry, I don't know what is 65 gallons.
I use Exoterra 45x45x60h cm for small species (Phantasticus, Ebenaui) and 50x50x100h cm for the others.

Fantastic! (pun almost intended)

A 65 gal aquarium in the states is 90x45x60h cm, but that's for the Lineatus. The Phantasticus is what I'm thinking of putting in the taller enclosure that is 40x40x175h cm. I'm still not sure about it though.

On a side note, why can't we all just use the metric system? :p

I'm going to chime-in here, on your housing ideas. In my experience, phantasticus will make use of height if you give it to them. I have successfully kept them in 12" tall enclosures, and ~20" tall ones as well. All of the ones I have had seem to climb to a high point when they're ready to sleep for the day. If I ever want to see them during the day, I can usually find them curled up in one of the highest leaves.

Side note: Anyone else find that there is a higher proportion of Uroplatus keepers within the cham keeper population, than within the regular herping population? Maybe it's just me, but most Uro fans I know are also cham fans, and my ball python/crested gecko/beardy set of friends usually goes "Uro-huhh?"

You're absolutely correct and I think it really comes from the fact that they're from Madagascar. As unique as they are, as a group they have a similar "feel" or "appeal". Just my take on it.

So you think that 16x16x70 is large enough for 6 adults? Something's telling it can work.

Thanks!

I am far from a phantasticus expert, but I think it's worth a try, especially if it's heavily planted. I have heard a lot of good stories of people housing 1.2 and 1.3 together, but I have also heard a couple of not-so-good stories when people have tried housing males together. Adult males will occasionally not get along... unfortunately, not something you can predict.

I have never kept them in a group-type situation (1.1, 1.2, etc) -- only individually. Hopefully some other Uro keepers on here have that experience they can share with you.

Cheers,
Drew

PM me for a link to a great forum to ask these questions on.. I'm no expert but some people on those forums are.
