Hello,

I have a quick question, I have a veild Cham, it is a boy, and yesterday while I was gone, I came back to find out that he was shedding! But I have a question, before the shedding he was easy to handle and loved coming out of his cage but now that he has shed, he has become very dark and very aggressive and hisses at me?

as they shed they get older..and also go through emotional changes just like "teens" do..its normal..just try hand feeding and show you are not a threat..

If you do any reading on veiled chameleons you will find they are the most agressive of the chameleons. That is not to say they are mean, but they are agressive. Most people on the forums with male veileds have some story about hissing and bitting at them. It seems to be the norm.

I find I just have to push past it when I need to handle mine for any reason. It is not much fun to stress him out, but if he needs meds or something I have to give them to him.

Yea both of my veileds aren't too friendly. The female is WORSE though she has been a vicious little thing since the day I got her. I've only had the male for a month and while he opens his mouth and hisses sometimes, he did let me handle him without issue once or twice. My female sometimes will come onto my hand but at the same time might go nuts at other times. Handfeed worms you are comfortable holding, my female came onto my hand yesterday without even hesitating to eat lol.

ya i have had many veileds..and very few of them are chill and relaxed like most others..yes you can have a nice calm veiled..is it easy, no, is it a five minute job..no...but its definatly possible

took this guy some time..but does happen..just stay calm, move slow..dont stare too much at them directly in the eyes..and hand feed and water by hand as often as possible..

I dont find that my veileds are really mean... When I first got them the Male would try to bite me but he doesnt do that anymore.... Only took a month for him to calm down and lots of hand feeding time, instead of dish time. My Female is slowly starting to adjust...shes never tried to bite but she does puff up or she will try to hide if I am taking her out.

Ive been wondering about this..

what if the female was really nice mannered and the male was chill and they had a batch of babies..would they take the mild mannered genes??

maybe you got some from a "friendly" batch??

when my cham first hissed at me, an open mouth hiss, it depressed the crap out of me. it's extremely saddening because chameleons are amazing and you just want to handle them for their own sake but theyre too defensive to realize that you mean no harm.

don't let it get to you, it's in their nature to be angry, it's like a 14 year old kid, and his father wants to hang out. the 14 year old feels he's too old to hang out so he rebels. get it?
now if she/he bites it becomes a problem... would mean your posing a serious threat, and that causes some serious stress. if it amounts to that immediately begin hand feeding, get some confidence amongst one another

@sdheli that is definitely a thought! I've never had experience with that but that would be neat! Really idk though.... Sometimes it isnt the genes and mainly the y way they are raised... Almost the same with people ;) treat your chameleons badly they react that way.... work with them and have loads of patience... they usually adapt

I cant agree more. it is patience and more than anything trust. Ok my pike will have his off days, dont we all ? But he gets handled nearly every day and hand fed and watered :) Yesterday he was out and about nearly all day he meets my neibhours climbs all over them ;) Must upload some of latest pics of him to photo bucket. You will all see what an amazing creature he is :)
