Shipping babies.....tell me how to do it

I've watched the Ship Your Reptiles video three times where they ship a snake. I plan to use Ship your Reptiles....I guess this is best????? Please tell me what you experienced guys do when you ship your babies please!!!!

Use the same procedures for a snake, but use a deli cup instead of a cloth bag. Add damp paper towels and you're ready to go. (This can go for most smaller reptiles.)

I like to throw a few fake leafs in there so they have something to grip. Don' t wet the towel too much as they can get tangled up in it and die.(I've had this happen to me.)

Jann, ship your reptiles has worked very well for me. I have used multiple methods for shipping. I have used a cloth snake bag and I have also used a tupperware container with the paper towel inside. Each method has worked with no issue.

Many chameleons I purchase are shipped to me either in a snake bag or in a tupperware container. Jim at the chameleon company has sent all my orders in snake bags. Screameleons and Chameleons Northwest have sent the chams in tupperware. Either way you do it, I like to use shredded paper on the inside of the box to help protect the precious cargo. I hope this helps a little for you.

another addition you can use is a kabob skewer in the middle of the deli cup so they have something to hold onto. Just run it right through the middle of the cup and tape it so it doesn't fall out.

Hey Jann,

When Catherine, PardalisGirl, shipped Adonis to Dustin and I, I took pictures as I opened the box. Hopefully, these will help.

When we ship chameleons we put some paper towels in the bag in case they use the bathroom and then pack the box with newspaper as shown. You may need to include cold/heat packs (depends where you are shipping).

This is also how I do it. But I put the damp not wet papertowel in the bottom, the skewer slightly about the towel and TAPE the lid shut. I had one show up where the lid had come off. I also fill the area around the deli cups with shredded newspaper as it is a great insulator and it really pads them well. I put the address on the inside as well as the outside.

Other than that, when you have them all in the box, put my address on and they are ready to go.:D

Hey Jann:

I use ShipYourReptiles and it is going to save you money. There are several ways that you can pack your box, but it really depends on temperatures of where it's going to and what you are shipping (i.e. adult vs. baby). Personally, I use packing material in the box (i.e. packing peanuts and/or shredded paper) and tr to use tupperware or the prepunched ones. Last week, I shipped the trans. veieleds back to Brad and, because they were larger than what I normally ship (and I wanted to fit them all in the same box), I used the ole' paper towel in paper bag, the same way Mike does when you buy one at a show.

Your temps of where you are shipping it to are going to determine whether or not you are going to use a heat pack, etc. When I shipped to Brad last week, we agreed that I didn't need to put a heat pack in because the temps weren't going to get that low. But, if you do need to use one, be sure to securely tape all 4 sides to the underside of the top of the foam with (if I remember correctly) the red stripe facing downward into the box but be sure to give enough space between the heat pack and the animal, so as not to fry it.

If you want, PM me your e-mail address and I can forward you some pictures that I took of some recent shippings and how they are packed (I always take them just in case).

Thanks for all the info and the pictures! Julie, pm sent. I do have just a couple more questions.

What size box for a 9 gram 3 month old veiled? What size deli cup? What to put in the deli cup with the baby??? Someone told me to put crumpled newspaper or shredded paper inside the deli cup with the baby?

No problem. I will e-mail you some pictures of what I'm talking about so you can get a visual explanation.

A 3 mos. baby veiled could go in a 16 oz. 4.5" x 3" prepunched deli cup and you can easily just use a 7x7x6 box (I am looking at the kind from LLL that are foam-lined but you can use the equivalent of whatever ShipYourReptiles has). This box will be small enough that I would use shredded paper as packing material. For that little of a baby, I would put a paper towel in the cup. But I'll send you some good pics so you can see what I'm talking about.

LMAO I want one bad and my time frame has been pushed back at least a year so I may need to pay Jann and Mike a visit lol

Hey Jann! All the babies look great!! Everyone has givin good points on how to ship but personally I do not like to use deli cups. For one they can bang off the cup and two depending if you are shipping to a cooler area and have a heat pack the heat can QUICKLY build up in the cup. I just had some chams shipped to me in deli cups and the holes were poked on the top of the lid. The top cup was covering the holes and I think the female was suffocating. I am sure you read that on FB:rolleyes: I like to use cloth bags for bigger chams and a paper towel or shredded news paper inside a brown paper bag with holes punched in the bag for smaller ones. Crumple news paper so the bag or container is nice and snug but not real tightly packed. Just enough to hold it in place.

Hope all goes well with the shipping!!:D

Edit: I feel if the cham gets banged around then its better to hit softer paper than a plastic side.

I always thought it was better for the cham if I put them in a deli cup but you make a lot of sense. My baby quads will go out in bags. That will be a long time from now.:D

There is no one answer to this puzzle.
It depends on where its being sent, temps, humidity, heat or cold packs yes/no, and size of animal.
It is as much a science as it is an art.

For small animals like dart frogs and BABY chams, please send in a proper tub, and pack well.
Larger animals do well in bags.
But add in the other factors and things can change fast.

In a bag a small cham can dehydrate quick if the humidity is poor most of the trip and heat packs are used.
Properly done, tubs retain humidity better while protecting their week bones.

I agree that if tubs are used, you have to be careful how you finish packing the box.
It's a long bumpy ride to the new owner.

oh jann..your not going to be able to sleep a wink the night you send your first baby out.

I still worry about everyone of mine I ship out!

I use delicups for the small chams and bags for the bigger ones. I use a 8x8x6 box and cut my own foam (found at home depot) to fit.
Use shredded paper as padding

I put "HARMLESS LIVE REPTILE - HANDLE WITH CARE" in big letters on the outside of the box. Poke 2 air holes.

Wait until at least till 4:45pm to drop them at the ups store for last pick up.
