rachelk i use this fake grass/carpet stuff, its flat and comes in green/brown/grey, you can find at petsmart or a petstore, it holds in moisture very well and it's washable, it's also non toxic too. it's made for reptiles.
I use that same stuff. It also helps with humidity! Works great...
