My Basking Light shorted out, how long do I have until my chameleonis in danger?

I wasn't sure what catigory this fell into so I just chose general desscution. I have had my veiled chameleon for about a week and I am starting to try holding him. Any tips, because every time I try to touch him he hisses at me.

I just got my chameleon last on sunday, april 6th, 2014, and he has been green scince then but over this weekend he has been less green and almost a dark, grayish, brownish color. Is there something wrong with my chameleon or am I just freaking out over nothing. gender: male size: 5 to 6...
