    Purpose of the casque.

Yep I just read that other post - thank you!

    Purpose of the casque.

I like that thought, similar to them puffing up to increase surface area for increased absorption. I'm not committed to any theory I just found the topic interesting.

    Purpose of the casque.

Is it simply unknown? Do you have a theory?

    Purpose of the casque.

I regret resurrecting such an old thread. I'm not asserting certainty, just my observations. I'm not a vet or biologist. What about the casque as an intimidation tool to lessen the likelihood of fights between males? We see similar situations with other animals that use size or some other...

    Purpose of the casque.

Yes! The snout is really neat with two ridges on each side that forms a nice channel running down to the mouth. The casque likely serves multiple functions.

Why do Yemen Chameleons have such high casques?

Intimidating rivals, not trying to impress females with a display but scaring other chams away from their territory. The bigger the casque, the more intimidating you look. Many animals use morphology to AVOID fighting which involves risks for both parties. Food competition + mating competition...

    Super worms

Superworms are high in phosphorus, fat and chitin and thus are not a recommended staple feeder. The biggest problem IMO is that superworms have a very high phosphorus to calcium ratio and you don't want that as calcium is used to process phosphorus and calcium deficiency leading to MBD is a...

Does anyone know where I can find a Senegal Chameleon?

I'm not saying its legally "endangered" a la the US Endangered Species Act, more that continued unmitigated wild collection is bad for the wild population. Even if they are prolific, we will prevent them from becoming threatened by discouraging wild collection for the pet trade. We need to do...

    Enrichment Ideas?

One simple idea I've had is to vary the plants and vines in such a way that the cham needs to grasp, maneuver, and distribute weight differently depending on where he is in the cage. This is probably more relevant for males as they seem to patrol their turf moreso than females. Maybe someone...

smoke from the fires... waiting for the zombies

Good luck @Beman and everyone impacted by the fires! I'm in Seattle and it's bad here like an orange-tinted nightmare. Last time the smoke was this bad it killed my guinea pigs who were already advanced in age but Xerxes didn't miss a beat. It's good not to need a ton of oxygen right now. This...

Does anyone know where I can find a Senegal Chameleon?

Short answer is no. The forum search function yielded this: Senegal Chameleon Captive Breeding. This could be out of date but my look around the internet tells me there aren't a lot of options. Given the lack of replies I doubt that has changed. If someone else on the forum has more experience...

    Seeing reflection in glass

Sorry to resurrect but I’m glad I found this thread. My old veiled (DOB ~3/2012) is going to outlive his enclosure and glass seems to be on a revival. Most of the time in the push-pull of glass vs screen discussions reflection stress is secondary -if mentioned at all- to the issue of RI. It...

Tongue issues and one eye occasionally closed during the day.

Shouldn’t they be refrigerated? I also write the date I got the supplements on the bottle and replace every 6 mos.

Does ghanns crickets have free shipping?

I looked into ghann's based on your recommendation in another thread. The good news I read today is the the PMG has stopped the open push to reduce USPS capacity. Good news for shipping reptiles and their supplies. Having USPS as competition to Fedex and UPS helps keep shipping costs down. I've...

    Bioactive question

I do use stones over the top of soil on my plants but it's probably overkill or an abundance of caution. I don't think it's 100% required but if it will give you peace of mind, go for it! For a fully bioactive setup leaf litter is great. Just do your research and make sure you can keep up with...

    Bioactive, where you at petr!

^^^ This. The "sterile" stuff is just using a straw man to make those who disagree appear to have a worse argument. A great response and far more brief than my own :ROFLMAO:

    Bioactive, where you at petr!

Yes, but there's a big difference between having an incomplete understanding of reptile immunity and trying to apply what we know about mammals to reptiles in order to bolster the efficacy of a preferred husbandry practice. One is admitting that there is uncertainty the other is trying to use...

    Bioactive, where you at petr!

In a perfect world nobody would keep chameleons in sub optimal conditions but we know that's not happening. I would submit that all of us are for the best care, but what that is up for debate and far from certain. I'm much more focused on the reality of the hobby as I see it and not the ideal...

    Bioactive, where you at petr!

Oh boy, folks, slow down! Why are we comparing the immunology of humans (mammals) to reptiles? They are very different animals with very different anatomy. If we look at science that is relevant for reptiles, it becomes clear that these types of comparisons are uninformed and potentially...

    Bioactive, where you at petr!

@PetNcs lays out cogent arguments on the limitations of "bioactivity". I have to agree. Bioactive setups are great for committed keepers who are willing and able to deal with the added complexity that bioactivity entails. I have to point out that there are posts on this forum daily that...
