Tried keeping some wild caught last year but died out with unsuccessful breeding. Only get them here in Canada in my area through August and September , my Panthers just love them, large green bugs are the best!.i try and collect some every day when I can
Forgot to mention I do use wild insects heavily for the few months in the year when they are available, really helps give variety and I can get them off my own land all safe from agrochemicals.just make sure to get fecals run to keep an eye on parasites, but I have not had any issues so far
Dunno then, ask sandrachameleon, also in BC
I breed most of my own feeders apart from crickets, mainly because of problems getting a regular supply- northern Manitoba
I'd go with stick insects, several species available, don't know about legality in your area.I like Indians, Ramulus, E. calcarata, D. Gigantea ,E. tiatarum are my preferred feeders , all easy to keep and breed well
I have had this happen to me before, not just limited to legs though, abdomens also. I put it down to overcrowding, there were mixed species on the Viv and some were more aggressive night feeders than others E. calcarata being the culprit most of the time.ended up splitting them up more and the...
They will eat Salal leaves once they are in the 2nd or 3rd instar stage.where I live there is nothing else available over the winter months and no outdoor greens till May.I buy a bunch of Salal from my local florist and keep that in a vase,it lasts about a week before the remaining leaves dry up...
Cabela's in Saskatoon has a regular supply through winter months, don't know about the other stores , a very handy change to the usual winter food supply!
Blue bottle larvae in Canada
Just to let my fellow Canadian chameleon keepers know if you are looking for blue bottle maggots try Cabela's, they sell for about $3-4 per 100 and are sold as walleye bait, I keep them in the fridge then bring out to room temp to allow to pupate and hatch
I cannot comment on the nutritional value but I am sure as part if a varied diet are useful. I breed them for my Panthers and all sizes of them can be used depending on the size of the chameleons. In Nanaimo there probably a long growing season for wild brambles and raspberry plants- I would feed...
Salal is a woodland shrub with large green leaves used in flower arrangements. I live In Manitoba that is as plant friendly as the arctic in winter. So I am heavily reliant on buying Salal from my local flower store, they sell it to me by the bunch and I have a deal with them to get some weekly...
If you have lots of eggs from a mated female then you should get enough to hatch to get a breeding colony going year round-should be plenty of brambles in Stanley park I expect most of the year, if not get Salal either pick yourself or buy from a flower shop-it's BC grown anyway I think. I feed...
Yes the eggs take up to 6 - 8 months to hatch usually, even under ideal incubation conditions- large Tupperware with soil/ peat kept damp and warm
However the females are prolific egg layers and the juvenile stages are really meaty snacks!!
Just wondering if anyone has had any success breeding wild Katydids. They are abundant now in my location in Canada and my Panthers go crazy for them, they have to be the best feeders I have ever tried.
I was considering trying to keep some captive and see if they will breed, would be nice to...
It' s ok I am in Canada and getting high 70's - low 80's as daytime highs, lots of full sun though, may use heat lamp for cooler days to provide warmer basking area
I am putting my 3 adult panthers outside during the day in a full sun location but with plenty of vegetation for shade if needed.Question is what would be the minimum night temperatures they could safely handle as I am considering leaving them out on warmer nights rather than bring them back and...
