I would not go smaller than a 12x12x18 for a pair. When doing the layers with hydroballs it is helpful to lay a strip of screen to prevent the female from digging into them when she looks to lay eggs. I like ferns, bromelaids, wandering jew plant, and schefflera(umbrella style) plant.

looks female to me and unless she was puffing up for you, the second photo looks like she is gravid as well. Be sure you have somewhere for her to dig and lay.
second appears to be male based on raised ridge on the back, more raised ridging around eyes, and longer tail evident by the tip curling under. These are the markers I use to sex my brevs, and sexed correctly 3 clutches of my own and countless brevs belonging to others.
