This isn't strictly true, Petco expects to take a loss on live animals. They offer them to sell supplies and to encourage multi-pet families to choose Petco as the place to buy their dog/cat food and supplies.

They sell small superworms at petsmart that would be appropriate. They do not sell roaches, you'll need to find a reptile specialty store or order online if you want to go in that direction.

His tail seems to be returning back to its normal color, however there is one dark spot that is still there and what likes like dried blood? I tried swabbing the area to see if any blood came up, but only got one tiny speck of red that may or may not have been blood. I have no idea what he could...
I inspected it pretty closely, and I don't see any cracks/open lesions. The only indication that anything might be wrong is the sudden change in coloration.
