I know overcrowding wasnt the issue. they were in 2 50gallon totes. they are about 24"w x 48"l. along with plenty of flats. Along with optimal feed and water. Only thing i can say is i hope some how it was heat in transit. They were shipped overnight and were delivered at 9am in the morning.

I wouldnt use anything. Just makes it harder to transfer beetles from one container to another. Ive had no problem just running bran only. Dont forget to move beetles every 1-2 weeks as the beetles and the newly hatched supers will start eating on eggs depleting the colony.
