Is it normal for my veiled chameleon to be going to sleep earlier he's active and has his eye open during the day but he's been going to sleep like around 7-8pm while the lights are still on and before this he would always go to sleep when I would turn off the lights around 10pm

I just made my veiled chameleon a new cage but I'm scared he might fall from the top should I put some dirt or something so he can at least have something to cushion his fall? (Still need to add all the plants and more vines)
