Does the veil on the chameleon have to be PERFECTLY straight or can it be a slightly crooked but still going straight up?

My veiled cham was taken out of cage to clean, but now when i try and pick him up to put him back he hisses, bites and runs away. I have had him for a week and a half. He is 2 months old.
