hello I just purchased a baby veiled chameleon and I was wondering if drift wood is safe for him

This may be a dumb question but I haven't seen my Jackson's chameleon change any other color than the bright green color he normaly is. Some times he will turn a darker green. If I were to put a variety of colors in his terrarium like a red color would he try to blend in with it.
