Pothos toxicity, what's up with it???

Sorry , So very new to this forum, still trying to navigate how this works Blows my mind that this question showed up today , I just had to euthanize my Jackson today for kidney damage and severe gout . He had been well, then after switching him to a new enclosure that contained a large hanging...

Pothos toxicity, what's up with it???

So i live in florida. Not sure if you have heard of all of the chameleon ranching going on in south florida. So anyways they live freely out there just like the iguanas. I have looked for information as to what plants these guys predominantly eat in that area as far as plants go. I wasnt able to...

Veiled killed his first live plant

I appreciate your concerns with this issue. In the thread that @kinyonga supplied the post implied that plants with calcium oxalate crystals, pothos and others, should not allow very much absorption of the oxalates and thus shouldn’t cause build up in the kidneys.

Pothos toxicity, what's up with it???

I tend to be on the side of the fence that they're safe, if I had a veiled, I'd probably use them. You would just think oxalate crystals would have some sort of burning just due to them being talked about like small pieces of glass. Idt there are many plants that will instantly kill an animal...

Chameleon ate a peace lily leaf

...Even the pollen from the spadix can cause oral irritation if licked off fur and paws. The culprit is the presence of calcium oxalate crystals. https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/houseplants/peace-lily/is-peace-lily-toxic-to-dogs.htm This is why it is best with Veileds to stick to Veiled...

    Philodendron Cordatum sage for veiled?

...school of thought. The only thing in heart leaf philodendrons that can cause issues (in mammals; limited/no data on reptiles) are oxalate crystals, which are present in most plants to some degree. If your animal is absolutely stripping the plant I'd be more concerned than a bite here and...

Know what kind of plant this is?

Heads up they have oxalate Crystal's, technically toxic, but so do pothos and people use those.

Pothos toxicity, what's up with it???

my Yemen chameleons reached 12 years with pothos and weeping fig intermittw tly and almost permanently in their cages. but it means nothing maybe they could have lived 16 years IMHO these plants have low to none toxicity for chameleons, taking into consideration the ammounts of leaves consumed...

False araila, former (scheffelera elegantissima) plant for panther viv safe?

Yeah, I know. Which is why I look up the reason behind the toxicity, and disregard anything that says "oxalate crystals", which don't appear to bother chams. I'm paying attention to actual toxic compounds, and skin irritants more than anything, and snoop around for mentions of possible reptile...

Veiled killed his first live plant

Im getting none plant eating species next week so wont be worried about this happening. Im not denying that that veiled may have the ability to process these and plant matter after all the are probably the most divergent evolution of all reptiles. And have the utmost respect for kinyonga...

Chameleon ate a peace lily leaf

Yup, the same compound that makes pothos toxic, yet they eat them with no harm.

Pothos toxicity, what's up with it???

See where you're coming from, but wouldn't really be the same. Fruit loops do have nutritional value. Not the best, but there is a reason people and animals crave sugar. Pothos for chams is probably more for fiber and maybe a little hydration It'd be like if we ate powdered glass on bark lol. I...

False araila, former (scheffelera elegantissima) plant for panther viv safe?

The easier way, would be to use Bird Data, they share alot more in common with Herps than Cats and Dogs do. Alot of our safe plant lists, were ripped from Bird guides and then vetted again with reptiles to be sure.

    Plants

...new plants. Specifically, if something is listed as "toxic" I look for the exact reason, and check on bird safe plant lists (great tip @cyberlocc!). If it's just oxalate crystals, I'm perfectly comfortable adding the plant. If it has irritating sap or "true" toxins, then I tend to take a pass.

    Safety over aesthetics

This. Right here. Check the pet Poison site for exactly why a plant is considered "toxic", and go from there. Oxalates arent a toxin - they're tiny bits of indigestible crystals that may prove irritating at an unidentified concentration. The sap of many ficus species (including benjamina, the...

    Safe Plants for new Vivarium

Unless the plant is listed as poisonous (not just "may cause stomach upset" due to oxalate crystals - actual toxins present), is known to cause skin irritation/dermatitis, etc, I'm of the mind that you can use whatever you want as long as your Veiled isn't a pathological plant eater. Even then...

    Bioactive Build

...a lot of plants you might want to use. Golden pothos is an aroid plant labeled as safe by all lists despite having calcium oxalate crystals (basically a local irritant), but I've seen Alocasia, Philodendron, and Monstera all labeled as toxic despite being from the same family and having the...

The Final Stretch! (Bioactive Build pt. 3)

I have been using philodendron for over a year now. Actually like it better than pothos as the root tendrils will actually grip through a screen cage.

Im actually amazed that site for reptiles, lists Belladonna as Not Toxic! But does list nightshade (all) as moderately toxic. I would really like a cage with some Belladonna, its SO GORGEOUS. But that just cant be right, there is no way lol. Ya nevermind lol, this site agrees, No GO...
