More compact soil (with less perlite) retains water better

I might’ve slightly overestimated on sticks.

...I’ve been trying a lot harder because I’ve waisted a ton of money as well… I think the best soil I’ve found for most of my plants is a mix of the fox farms with some orchid bark and more perlite …. Again no clue just picking up tips and tricks from people that seem to know what they’re doing.

My project with Calumma Malthe, Emerald Eared Chameleon

Ok, apparently nobody sells vermiculite anymore. I went ahead and bought a bag of perlite (I needed some anyway), and from my reading on here it seems to be a viable option as well. Are there any cons to using Perlite over Vermiculite?

Chameleons eating stuff in flower pot help!

It might also look like a calcium source ie small piece of bone. But it is sharp and can also cause impaction so not good!

    Repotting plants!

...excel in poop pics. I'm trying to repot all of my plants. I just discovered that 1 bag of organic soil has bark and the other bag has perlite. UGH!. I washed all of the soil from the Pothos (its probably gonna die!) I replanted it with the organic soil with bark. Tomorrow im dumping...

My project with Calumma Malthe, Emerald Eared Chameleon

Hope the perlite works! Try to get the coarse vermiculite...it stays moist better.

My project with Calumma Malthe, Emerald Eared Chameleon

...Depots, after asking around it seems like it just isn't popular enough for the stores to profit. I'll order a bag online, but for now the perlite seems safe. I rinsed and strained it to get out the dusty particles too. Back when I started keeping chams (about 8 years ago) perlite was the...

Never used perlite....so I have nothing to say about it! What kind of stores did you look at?

    Enclosure not draining?

don't use perlite - no matter the grade. perlite dust is harmful to humans and animals, and it is super easy to crush. So even if the chameleon snags a piece that is too big to fit in its mouth, it will crush it into smaller bits as soon as it bites down. They are very attracted to perlite as...

    Started a bio tank

...consider it one of my greatest achievements due to how well it functioned. First you need a bio active drainage layer you can use lava rock, perlite, or LECA (clay pebbles) preferably i would use LECA. after applying the DL (Drainage Layer) you want a substrate barrier the best choice is...

    White worms on egg

@kinyonga those are too long to be phorids. My money is still on that they’re white worms that hitched a ride in one way or another and made the moist perlite home.

To pot or not to pot that is the question

...my little female panther wouldnt use a laybin.. Iam happyto report she dug a nice hole and laid without issue so my odd setup works like a charm. Oh make sure your soil doesnt have bark or perlite in it. thier tongues r very strong and whatever they hit goes down the gullet. No small rocks...

    Started a bio tank

Also use leaf litter as the chams might try to eat the isopods.

    Lay bin mix

The white pebbles are probably perlite. It’s so hard to find potting soil that doesn’t have that in it. I would use just the play sand or at least just a scant amount of the potting soil. Perlite is not something you want to risk your girl accidentally eating…could cause a blockage as I recall.

    Potting soil-what to use?

...but it’s still important to build and then maintain trust. For potting soil, it is next to impossible to find any that doesn’t contain perlite (the white styrofoam-like bits). I’ll use organic garden soil and then add some things like coco coir, chopped sphagnum moss, horticultural charcoal...

    Help with my first chameleon!

...in Portugal, perhaps the example will help you find something similar. I mix the sand with this organic soil. You do not want soil with perlite or those little fertilizer balls - you want as natural as possible. Another important thing is what supplements have you been using for her...

    Egg laying

...here on how to set them up and incubate. You would want something like a large shallow Tupperware container filled with a couple of inches of perlite that has been moistened just enough so that if you squeeze a handful, it will just barely give a drop of water. I’m not 100%, but I believe...

    Giant poop???

I had it covered before but he wasn’t messing with the dirt after I took it out so I wonder if he simply just got a piece while getting a bug bc there was only 1 piece. I am buying rocks rn to cover it again just in case and I use calcium powder on every meal and then zoo meds reptile vitamins...
