Husbandry Review for Young Veiled Chameleon that is Gaping

Hiya! I’ll tag some experts. I think it’s very strange that your vet told you to change your supplementation schedule. It’s very important that chams have all their food dusted with calcium to prevent MBD. Looking at what you’re feeding him, I would say to cut out the mealworms and incorporate...

Husbandry Review for Young Veiled Chameleon that is Gaping

Hi all--I have been reading the threads on here, and wanted to make sure I made any husbandry changes since my chameleon Wisto hasn't been acting as usual lately (gaping last 2 or 3 days). Sorry for the long post but hopefully it has all the info needed. I would very much appreciate a review if...

...proper UV, proper supplements, and lack of ventilation. It only maters that these are met. It doesn’t have to be pretty or brand name. Look up butterfly cage. 24x24x36 is a great size to start for about $40. Focus on getting a 24in 6% or 5.0 T5HO. The rest can be managed by hand misting

    What Next?

I agree with not taking for a walk. Outside is great, but I'd suggest an enclosure; butterfly cages are inexpensive for the short term. Please do not leave unattended even for a minute, and research ahead of time what kinds of predators/scavengers may lurk in your environs—cats (domestic and...

...I was going to suggest a butterfly cage for keeping locusts. When I was a kid, I caught grasshoppers daily in the back field and fed them directly to my green anoles.

    Breeding hornworms!

...they ingest these they then become toxic for the chameleon because tomato plants are in the nightshade family. Google it and do a search on the forum. They produce a ton of eggs and they hatch out really fast. You need hornworm food for them. You need a butterfly cage. And the moths drink...

Cage search is like the gas shortage 🤣 any suggestions

Yup I have lots of these. They're also nice for collecting wild insects, stickbugs, grasshoppers, moths, mantids, etc.

    Summer is almost here!

I'd suggest getting something like a butterfly cage or putting together a simple outdoor enclosure to put that plant inside to guard against indigenous raptors (hawks, falcons, owls, buzzards). ;)

New owner / dark in color

Ya. I was thinking to just build one that’s what he needs and just do light adjustments for him temporarily until it’s done. But seriously this cage is so neat I am really thinking of keeping it for something else for sure

    Welcome My New Girl Gamora!

...on a fake tree. We weren’t expecting her or we would have been ready. My daughter came to the door and said surprise and handed Mike a butterfly cage with Gamora in it. She said if she’d told her dad ahead of time she was afraid he’d say no more chameleons. Thank you Donna for your comment...

Why is my panther going to the bottom of his cage?

Hello! My husband and I have a male panther chameleon, about 8 months old and he’s been exploring the bottom of his enclosure a lot recently. He seems to be at the bottom most of the day just climbing around like he’s looking for something. He has live plants- an umbrella tree and a butterfly...

My Jackson gave birth to a baby.

...are adorable! Soon you will have to separate them all into they’re individual enclosures because they’re very territorial and will stress each other out. You can use collapsible butterfly cages you can get on Amazon. you will also need lots of pinhead crickets and fruit flies. @JacksJill @Mendez

    save a chameleon

You can possibly build a frame of some sort for the butterfly cages to sit on and put a pan like a big plastic bin or something like that below to catch water. I would only put two chams in one cage because they will compete for food and the weaker ones won’t get enough and as they get older...

Thank you so much for your response and support. This community has been a godsend long before I signed up and posted when I was still figuring chameleon care out. What enclosure did you use for a temporary setup? Or did you use your initial enclosure but sterilized and gutted of infectous...
