Thanks. That's the answer I wanted to hear. But, I would have changed things if it wasn't the answer I wanted to hear:D I will keep and eye out to make sure he spends enough time under it.
I don't mean to hijack this thread. But I have a light question now that I have read this. I have a 5.0 and the free roam will be a six foot tree. The area around the tree that he will be able to roam is approx. 2 1/2 feet. Is this 5.0 enough UVB? By the way, it's 18 inches.
The UVB bulbs, fluorescents due have to be switched out every six months. They still give out light, but the uvb is no longer helpful. The mvb (mercury vapor bulbs) last one year, but they aren't cheaper and they are a lot hotter and I don't believe they are recommended for Chams. I'm fairly new...
I live in Chicago, Wrigleyville. Don't have a chameleon yet. Will be getting it after the new year. I have torts, Uro, frogs, bird, cat, dog, fish. Glad to see quite a few others from my area on hear. I hope I won't have a heat problem with him. He will also be by the window. I will probably...
Just a reminder for anyone with certain types of animals/reptiles. Don't use automatic toilet bowel cleaners. This could have been a bad situation had it not been just water. Glad he's okay and we can laugh about it:)
Very sad though if the guy works at Petco and doesn't know anything about the animals they are selling. Good for you though for filling him in. On the tort forum, I stress all the time. If you see a bad situation, say something and try to educate. If you don't, your just as guilty as the person...
I have actually been thinking that may be my best option too. I have been playing with the lights and mister and with the thickness of the fake tree I have, I think there will be enough options to get away from the light if I did put it vertical. It's just not looking to good trying to do it...
Can I place the fluorescent UVB bulb so it hangs vertical (floor to ceiling) with the tree?
Or
Does it have to hang horizontal (side to side) at the top of the tree?
Sounds great thanks. Been a lot of years before I had a Cham. Wasn't sure if most things were the same as I had done back then. You never know. Tortoises care has changed a lot in just the last 5 years or so, so wanted to make sure I'm doing right by the Cham.:)
Thanks for the info. I was just wondering, as screen is not a thing we want for torts, and I don't use anything like screen for my Uro. I do have a 5.0 tube for uvb and a 50 watt UVA basking bulb. Is it okay to have them next to each other at the top of the enclosure? It's a free range...
I read all the time about the screen enclosures being the best for chams. I also read that the lights should be put on the outside of the enclosures. I belong to a tortoise forum. We also use UVB for our torts. However, it is not recommended to put any type of tightly woven screen, etc between...
I am new to this forum. I don't have a chameleon yet. However, I am buying a male only, for the same reason (egg laying/egg bound, etc) that you are having second thoughts about with your female. I understand you love your Cham, but if you are uncomfortable with her and really would rather have...
Should I run the monsoon so it gets the whole tree/enclosure wet, or should I run it so it gets most of it wet, but leaving the very top dry, so he has a dry place to go to if he doesn't want to sit in the mist/wet.
Also, if I use hardware cloth to block him from getting to the basking bulb...
