I know this is old, but what a great read! Sounds like we need a way to measure different temps i.e. room temp, basking spot temp and basking spot's ability to generate heat absorption and in turn ability to generate a much higher core temperature than the actual basking spot temperature...
I picked up a couple more Melleri today listed as "Long term captives", and are maybe 18 inches and half the weight of my other Melleri, so very young. Not sure the history on them other than that. The one on the left fit an elongated stature, while the one on the right showed a much deeper...
Seriously Jack, you should contact the police and take the time to file a report. Regardless if someone brought many of them back, they created a terrible situation and performed an act of theft with no regard or respect for you. You now have a missing female (possibly dead) and a bunch of other...
Do keep me posted ChamMan7. I got a shipment of of large Dubia's and large G. portentosa this week, and the Melleri loves them both. I actually think I can get more food out of these than I ever could have feeding strait crickets. The Melleri seems to eat more and has become much more excited at...
You can place a small hole in the feeding cup at bottom and run a firm guitar string into the hole. Then you move the dead bug to simulate a real bug moving. Could also hot glue a piece of flat plastic to the string as well to move a larger area. In my experience wiggling the cup can scare them.
Maybe dusting it with powdered food for geckos might make the taste worthwhile? Or try smaller ones with this dust. They are definitely crunchier to chew, so maybe he/she does not like that part of it, after getting used to softer food.
Thanks for all the great tips and info Garrett, SSimsswiSS and ChamMan7. I am sold on each species still, for the sake of interest and can always sell off what is not working for me.
ChamMan7, I already have a strong interest in the different hisser species, have you shared this collection...
I ended up ordering all 6 species and have put together a design using 20g tubs that looks to be escape proof (largest holes would be the aluminum screen). Most will be ready to test feed large ones so I can offer my Melleri's opinion. With the exception of Gromphadorhina oblongonota, as I will...
Thanks Olimpia, sounds like fuscas might be good to keep me from feeding out the large female and a reminder to keep the hissers secure.. I get in trouble when crickets are walking down the hall. I say they are coming from outside , but an exotic looking roach will not pass that...
You must have it in a reflector. Typically very little heat is transferred to the actual light source and diverted to a heat sink, in your bulb it is around the base. So the heat is coming off the heatsink and pushed out through the reflector. I am not sure if this is a good thing, because...
So I have been doing investigation on large feeders to work with and my past experience was the fairly easy Dubia, but maybe a little small for what I want. I am looking at starting with a small handful of species and see what works out the best and/or have a constant variety. I am looking at...
Unfortunately, Southern California does not get the rain and humidity like you guys get in Florida, and our highs/lows are rather extreme at least compared to Tanzania Highlands and Coastal climates the Melleri inhabit. Hopefully with your set-up, you get some cb going and captive lines become...
I am thinking a good choice will be Toltrazuril or Panazuril for direct treatment and some more investigation on cleaning of the environment. I am wondering if spraying down the cage with amprolium on a regular basis while treating?
Yeah I have a room dedicated and laundry tub with scalding hot water and soap. Would be something just to research coccidia species and determine if a difference between strains that are deadly vs probiotic if a type. There are a lot of tropical species breeders who believe very strongly in some...
