sorry for the late response the litter that i use for the rats is called critter litter by super pet. I use the one made for ferret and rabbits im sure if it works for the rats the chin shouldn't be too different in that respect.
Has his bathroom habits been any differant? If so it may be exreamly urgent. Male cats can become blocked by chrystals in their urine. When mine became blocked his stomach hurt to the point that you described. For a male cat this IS a medical emergency. When i got my cat to the vet his bladder...

I sandwiched 2 layers of bath towel between fleece on both the front and back. People do it alot of different ways, even putting something waterproof on the back
Here is mine that i made in my rat cage. I have my rats litter trained so it makes it even easier to clean the cage. I have found that etsy.com has alot of people that make the liners and they run about $15. Its much much cheaper to make them.
It is a stainless bird feeder. It has a screw that pokes through the screen and a peice on the other side to hold it in place. Heres a pic of what the bowl sits in. It works very well, i donthave to worry about it falling. Asaigo is waiting for her noms.
I acuually like the bugs. Learning about them, feeding, and it always gives me somethin to do.lol but i still use some big tongs and think they look ikky i spend more time careing for the bugs than i do for 2 rats, Asaigo (veiled cham) a cat and a german sheperd
