Way back when I kept Jacksons, I actually ended up not using a vitamin supplement, just gut-loading feeder insects with plenty of orange veggies. Calcium w/D3 was fine, though.
I killed my first female Jacksons by over supplementing her :( That was when I was young and naive. I thought the...
I've had more edema problems with Jacksons than any other kind of cham, which is probably old news to the experts around here ;) I think they might be more sensitive to vitamin A than other species.
Anyway, she's adorable. I love the horn - you should name her Unicorn :D
I, too, am concerned about the number of sleeping pics you have of your cham. A healthy Jacksons should not stay asleep for more than a few seconds after the lights are turned on, or fall asleep on a person's hand. He also looks a little thin and dehydrated to me in that 3rd pic.
Not that...
If the product contains DEET, then do not use it anywhere near your chams. Although it says it's not harmful to pets and humans, DEET is still extremely toxic to reptiles - even the fumes alone are enough to kill.
I believe it is also specific only to mosquitoes, so won't do anything for gnats.
As a working artist, I can tell you that the Orphan Works Bill has not passed yet. So if there's a copyright infringement here, it's just your typical run-of-the-mill type: someone sees photos they like on the internet and 'steals' them to use for their work or uploads to a stock photography...
All right, here are a couple pics from the street (not close enough to see any chams). It's actually bigger than I thought at first:
The house is off to the left. I think they also have a little solar panel on the top, maybe for lighting? Zoomed in:
Anyway, I want my own now :p
I'll take a picture this evening when I walk the dog (assuming it's not 110 degrees out, or pouring, or both). Obviously, I'd never trespass or harass the homeowners, but it is visible from the street. I was planning on getting a few snaps of the neighborhood anyway to send to my parents so they...
I was walking my dog this morning in our little neighborhood, which is a weird mix of shabby, falling-down wrecks and very nice older homes - a lot of the neighbors are older hippy types. Anyway, I was going by a nicer home with a very nice, very lush, very well cared for yard, and noticed a...
Ugh! Just found out that dubia roaches are illegal here. Of course: another reason to hate Florida ;)
That might nix my plans for getting a chameleon. I hate raising crickets, and they're so expensive to buy. Dubia are so easy in comparison. Plus, I like them as creatures - they're almost cute.
UVB light doesn't actually give off D3 - animals exposed to sufficient UVB are able to synthesize their own D3. Calcium has to come from the diet (or supplements). Sorry - just thought I'd clear up a common misconception :) I agree, though: animals kept outside in natural light should not need...
Another issue with cricket escapees, is that the crickets will soon grow to a size that is dangerous to eat. I had a young brev choke to death on a cricket that was way too big for him to swallow. Chams really aren't good at avoiding food that is slightly too big. Just something to think about.
She looks underweight to me. MBD, particularly when it affects the mouth, can lead to difficulty feeding. Hopefully, she'll gain weight when you start getting the MBD under control. I would increase the amount you feed slightly too until she's a better weight.
To me, it would totally depend on whether I got an adult or a juvenile, and I've never given both RepCal w/ D3 and without at the same time (depends on whether the animal was an inside or outside cham) and never had a problem with MBD issues, so I think there's more than one right answer :)...
Thanks for the replies, dudes :D I've had many chameleons before, so I know how frustrating and rewarding it it. I guess I'll... think about it a little more ;)
Thanks for the replies :)
Well, I would wait, but we're not going to be able to live anywhere permanently for at least 6 years - and maybe not even then - just due to our jobs. Meanwhile, I'm getting old and not doing the things I want to do. Maybe that's me being selfish? And maybe I...
I'm on the verge here :o but I'll let you guys decide. A little information first:
Due to school and moving around the country and such, I haven't been able to keep chameleons for almost 8 years. And now I'm tired of waiting. I've had experience with many species (I did my Masters work on...
