I would say Jacksons are not a good beginner cham. I love them, but they're not the easiest - and that's based on a lot of experience and heartbreak :o
Thanks! My yard actually has pretty dense foliage, so I'm pretty sure I'll be able to give him a good amount of visual cover.
Hmmm... So I've come across my first issue: the spot in the yard I had picked out contains a very large tree philodendron, which are pretty toxic if eaten. It's a...
My list of top 10 reasons for wanting to leave Fl changes all the time. Right now, it looks like:
1. Mosquitoes
2. AC bill
3. Mosquitoes
4. Mosquitoes
5. The heat
6. The humidity
7. Mosquitoes
8. Strip malls
9. Mosquitoes
10. Mosquitoes

eta: Finally got my camera working, so...
He hasn't arrived yet, but he'll be here soon :)
This cage is mostly done - I just need to attach some door hardware and set it in place. We have to use a brick base to support the wood because of the wet conditions here in FL. Normally, I would just sink the wood base into the soil, but...
Oh god :( the $500 electric bill! This is really something they should tell you about before you move to Florida. I don't even have that many herps right now. It's just the heat + old AC unit in an old house that makes it add up.
Hardware cloth is a metal wire product - the name is a little misleading. Here's a link to one type, but you can buy it in different mesh sizes and in different widths and lengths...
I'm using hardware cloth (possibly with a layer of screening inside) because we live in a cat and rat infested neighborhood.
We're from California, which is a far superior state :p
Yes, I bought a cham, a male panther :D Now I'm working on his cages. He's going to have a large outdoor cage and a smaller (but nicer looking) indoor cage.
For the outdoor cage, I wanted to build it as large as possible because that gives the cham more space to thermoregulate. Plus, it's...
I would put the smaller mesh screen on the inside: hardware cloth has large gaps, and a cat or other creature could possibly hook an unsuspecting cham with a claw if the cham was clinging to the wire. If the screen is inside the hardware cloth, there's no chance your cham will be able to contact...
It's a male Jackson's and he looks terribly dehydrated and thin. Jackson's need a higher humidity, and cooler temps than some other chameleons that pet stores are familiar with. Their natural homes are in cooler, wet mountain jungles and forests.
First, if it's too hot for you in the room...
Looks like sex is determined by genetics in veiled chameleons, but it can certainly be different for other species:

The geckos and anoles are wild caught in Florida - there's no question about that. The house geckos are collected in urban settings (because that's where they're most common) where they've been exposed to all kinds of pesticides and household chemicals.
There's no way I'd ever feed any of...
Most of the jacksons I've owned have had yellow-ish mouths, but I'd be concerned if it's a change you just noticed.
I'd get rid of the 'night light' - you won't need it unless your house temps drop below 60F or so. A drop in temps at night is beneficial to most chameleons. I would also try to...
