Okay, that's good to hear. I'll keep an eye on him and let folks know if he's doing alright. He's bright green right now and "hiding" behind the ficus. :)
Part of me knows I'm just being a worrywart, but it's been quite some time since I got a new reptile(especially one that requires such specialized care). I know reptiles are usually reluctant to eat early on, but it would make me feel *much* better if I saw him go for some crickets. I remember...
Well, I've put like 12 in there and I'm not sure he's eaten any. :(
He ate 4 yesterday, but we'll see how he goes. I suspect another thread will be made by me soon enough if I don't notice a drop in the cricket population by tonight.
As the title of the thread says, he is *very* shy at the moment. He almost posed for those pictures, but he's right now hiding and looking stressed. Maybe later I can get a better picture.
I guess I'm still worried. He looks good? His side(s) are supposed to look like that? I've raised many...
Here are two pictures. FLChams said he was 3-4 months old.
In the second one you can really see the ribs. He was like that yesterday when I got him. Is that normal?
I'm not sure what to make of it. He's brown most of the time(got him yesterday), but the temps are good(70 would be the coldest it gets) and the basking area gets to 95; where he's at would be around the 80's.
He seems really skinny--his ribs were visible when I opened him up yesterday and they...
Yeah, he's not in the mood for being hand fed; he runs as soon as I open the cage. Leaving my hand in there makes him go *Dark* brown. I don't like that.
Right now, I'm leaving him alone and seeing if he goes for any of the crickets in there. The temps are good, I think(basking area is around...
I just put 12 in there and we'll see how it goes. I'm leaving for work soon enough, and I can check on how many there are after I come back.
Thanks again everyone. I know I'm probably just overreacting--I mean, I've seen him eat and drink--but I just want to make sure this is solved.
I want to leave him alone. That's the thing. Free ranging crickets is, then, the right thing to do? Just throw like 10 in there and leave him be? I'm more than happy to do that.
PM sent.
I am free ranging the crickets right now. It's hard, as you might imagine, keeping track of how many he's eating(and at this age, he should be eating quite a bit). His cage has LOTS of cover--wish I had a camera to show--and it makes it tricky to keep track of the crickets.
Should I throw like...
I recently got a Juvenile Veiled Chameleon from FL Chams(CBB he said), and I am so shocked at how skittish he is. It is making it very difficult to feed my little Cham--the feeding bin I had prepared it won't go near; when I put anything in it, he runs to the other side of the enclosure and...
The egg sac can take the snow for sure. It needs the cooler temperature to trigger it. If you don't want to put it outside, I think(not positive) you could put it in your freezer/fridge for a bit and trigger the sac to erupt. Please, however, look into that on your own as I'm not totally sure.
Yep, they should hatch if you leave them alone. You might consider taking them outside, however. Your yard will be teeming with them when it hatches! Good cham food, from what I understand. :p
All Mantids are diurnal. Gotta be honest, I'm jealous.
Okay, this is the last question for a while(I swear).
I've read some (seemingly) contradictory information in regards to Veiled Chameleons. Some say that you can take them down to 40f at night while others say *anything* lower than 65f is terrible for them. I guess the question is...
They need warm temperatures(70-80) and, the most important, is a good humidity gradient(60% at least). I've lost many mantids due to them shedding and dying in the process. Keep it warm, relatively humid, and feed them a ton; I've never, ever, heard of a mantis refusing food. :D
You could...
The topic is fairly straightforward, at least in terms of the question. Here's my problem: I want a, preferably, CBB Veiled Chameleon(Nosey be would be ideal, but that's awfully pricey!) but I don't live in an area which has them readily available(Mid-Michigan). I believe I'm forced into the...
Thanks everyone. I work at a Petstore, and the the exo-terra kit is looking pretty good(especially with an employee discount). :p
I'll keep everyone posted when I get the guy later on(FL Chams, I'm thinking).
Thank you everyone for the replies. For whatever reason I hadn't ever considered covering sides of the screens during winter. >_>
That could work. Also, I'm not exactly mechanically adept, haha. Girlfriend's father is, however; perhaps worth considering a custom cage?
Would a night bulb for...
First, I'd like to say I've been a lurker here for some time--hiding in the trees, let's say. :D
Now, to begin, I've wanted to get a Chameleon for a few years. I feel comfortable with my reptile husbandry at this point, and I know I'm competent enough to care for one of these guys. Part of...
