perfectly normal he just wants to absorb more heat they do that by darkening up and they will flatten there body out and kinda turn sideways to get the most of there body surface getting hit by light

that charchol screen has and amazing look to it id recomend it for the sides but i would use a more open mesh for the top so more light get through. I noticed that the charchol screen has a very tight mesh pattern so might block a little bit to much light but thats JMO

pond pump is a total waste of time dont even bother trying they just dont get the right pressure even if u reduce thee lines and everything, u need a diaphram pump in order to get the right setup, best i can say is just try to shop around for one someone somewhere has to have one for a good...
